Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

It sounds like you are being throttled. What I would like to see is on Afrihosts Bandwidth monitor an indicator "Throttled : YES/NO". This would stop 90% of the guessing.

And/or a running count of your current 30 day window bandwidth usage, not the current month to date one which is irrelevant for these accounts.

Ive only used 2Gig of that account, throttling can not take place that early, or I hope not...

Sorry again for the general answer, but a few of you asked why it's affecting other areas like PE and East London.

If the issue is the IPC upgrade, then it would affect users who route via our Cape Town IPC, which would be pretty much everything in the Eastern and Western Cape. I'll admit what baffles me is how some users report different results on capped accounts, so we are still looking into EVERY possible cause until we fix this.

Once the IPC upgrade is complete, we'll have a good idea of how much this has contributed.

Afriman - can you guys not setup a Google Docs spreadsheet file with columns indicating:
* Uncapped Connection
* Uncapped Speed (Current ex speedtest.net)
* Time of test
* Capped Speed (Current ex speedtest.net)
* Time of Test
* Location
* Speed Stable/Unstable

Maybe we can all fill it in and it can help you guys out?

This is a great idea. I am also considering posting a knowledge base article on support.afrihost.com with all of the tests and diagnostics we would like, so that we can have definitive test results to analyze.

I'll let you guys know what the man upstairs says :)

i sense a lot of people here haven't been on uncapped before ? even on openweb gold/ mweb uncapped which are supposed to be the "best" most days during day time i never saw downloads much past 1meg on a 4 meg account. If you are expecting full 440kb/s any second of the day, you are in the wrong country.

Hell on Mweb for one whole month the fastest speed i saw at anytime was 50kb/s, you try and get through to anyone thier to help you then.

4cer - we are not talking torrents here - just normal surfing and downloading during the day - even at 10:00pm at night we are getting speedtest.net speed tests between 1mb/s and 2mb/s fluctuating tremendously on a 4meg uncapped line and it only started doing this 3 days ago... the 10meg uncapped guys are getting the same - many of us have been on uncapped for a long time and know when things go awry.

not everyone is experienced ;) it is very weird though. Cause my HTTP on afrihost has been perfect.. torrents if i start right now go at 100kb/s but i just did a speed test right now. Its on a 4meg account

You're a little late to the party. It seems better this morning - hopefully it's due to the IPC upgrades and this time it'll last. Also note only people in the Cape / PE seem to be affected.

Mine also seems to be much better.

I signed up on the 10 MB uncapped yesterday (AH) - based in Midrand.... results are really "not good" compared to the 2 other 10 MB uncapped accounts with other ISPs. So the problem cannot just be Cape Town....

I second what Quilabyte has said; the problem is not just Cape Town - I am based in Randburg and am also experiencing the same problem.

Amusing that Cape Town seems to have stabilised and the rest of the country are now reporting problems. Would be hilarious if the IPC "upgrade" turned out to be re-purposing existing IPC capacity from other regions.
