Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Just a note on benchmarking, the bust they've enabled in shaping is just enough to flummox a speed test server to give an improved speed reading. Look at throughput in applications to get a feel for the real speeds you're getting.

Hi Guys

I can understand that many of you are very frustrated (and a little angry). What I can say is that we are doing everything we possibly can, even our company directors are involved in trying to get this resolved as soon as possible. I am told that this is once again an IPC issue, and that additional capacity has been ordered with Telkom. I don't have an ETA as to when this will take effect.

I can't comment on whether there is any deliberate action (or non-action) from our upstream provider, as far as I am aware we still have a good relationship with IS and will continue to retain capacity on their network for some time in the future. However we are looking to make the network change in the quickest possible time to get through this IPC issue, as MTN's network will have more than enough capacity to ensure we don't have this again (or at least for a very long while).

As soon as I am given the go-ahead I will give you guys more information on the network move. I will also post on the current IPC issue, but we are sadly still waiting for a definitive way forward. I know that from some perspectives this may not be good enough, and some may want to jump ship to other ISP's, but I hope that you will stick with us while we get through this. We truly believe that once we have made our move across networks, Afrihost clients will be enjoying THE Premium Service.

On behalf of the Afrihost team, our sincere apologies :(

After months of slow internet, poor download speeds, line dropping, my family not been able to play X Box live properly, I finally had enough!!! I have contacted Afrihost on numerous occasions only to be told the problem was with Telkom. This past week was more than I could handle and I decided to sort this out once and for all. I contacted Afrihost and they so called reset my acc, done various other checks, assured me that there were no restrictions on my acc and yet again told me that I must contact Telkom. I logged a complaint with Telkom who sent someone out the same day, they tested the ADSL line and found everything perfect, they done a speed test and showed me that I was only getting 78kb/s and I pay for a 4mb line, doing the same test with a Telkom ISP, the result was over 4mb. So it was back to Afrihost who then informed me that they were experiencing problems...AT LAST some honesty, they told me the problem would be resolved the next day, not true!! Phoned again and then discovered that they do not have enough bandwidth to satisfy everyone, I was informed that they are working on the problem and it should be resolved mid Oct or the end Nov! I have moved to another provider
A quote from a complaint about Afrihost is Hellopeter . I don't know from where the complainer got middle October or end of November but this is what is written there .

No idea what the person could be referring to, my experience is people hear what they want to hear and remould them into facts. That definitely is not any official date relating to the network move or the IPC issue.

Afriman, please list out here the current shaping policies in effect by Afrihost. Speedtest is obviously no longer an effective indicator of speed as you're throttling after an initial burst just about long enough to display a somewhat acceptable speed.

So basically what you are saying is some day in the future I don't know how or when things will be better.

Part of my problem(s) might have been due to my flaky wifi AP. :o  :o How embarassing. You'll never expect that sort of thing. :(

Will report back as soon as I have it replaced.

@Afriman: You're not giving us much to go on, if you were a business ISP you would've been out of SLA and in arbitration by now. The poor feedback is really disappointing.

I appreciate that you're currently given a limit on what you may disclose. However the longer Afrihost waits with disclosure the more the situation will fester with non-technical posts like the reference on hellopeter.

It would appear as if Afrihost is not getting the backhaul required and that it has not been provisioned for. Becasue no technical reason is currently being provided it throws doubt on Afrihost.

Update: Port80 traffic is now moving along at 3 mbps on a 10 mbps line with shaping in effect.

Well I have some Business to do. I cannot even update Client's PC's Due to the fact that this Connection Sucks... So Basically I am loosing money now? What to Do? Think I am gonna give Afriman a call and cancel my acc and this months Debit Order.. I need my Interwebs. One thing i can say about Mweb and openweb. They had back-ups everytime they had a problem......What to do man, what to do?

My wild stab in the dark guess would be that IS decided to re-institute their heavy daytime throttling policies without exception, prompting AH's decision to move to MTN.

I don't know what to say. I'm actually very dissappointed. I think its our (clients) fault that this has happened. We were the ones who voted Afrihost the best ISP on numerous occasions. And now? It's gone to their heads and they started slipping up big time.

I think that's what happened. IS, you sucks with your throttling policies. The agreement was between AH and myself, if AH detects abuse then they should take the steps, not you guys (IS).

Will give AH until the end of the year. More than enough time. If this persists next year, then I will jump ship.

Speeds were fine the whole weekend, come eight o'clock this morning everything slowed down to a crawl. Cancelled.

If you are on IS.....got this this AM: There is currently a major network issue causing slow speeds and high latency.

Engineers are attending. I apologise for the inconvenience
