Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Le sigh... I hope the latency and speeds get sorted soon... Got so much work to do. Would post a speed test but can't even get it open...

Here here. Guys type in "ping google.com -t" in cmd. Watch the numbers. My highest was 2500 :p

But on a serious note, not impressed afrihost. How many complaints will it take for you to decide maybe you've made a bad business decision?

I have been a happy Afrihost user for close on 5 years now, wouldn't go anywhere else, they have had their hiccups, but I'm not about to jump ship. Yes I get disheartened, but they have always given me great service and support where Telkom and other ISP's have failed me.

Got a Speedtest back now, not so great, but hey... Very up and down...

We've received an update from MTN that the latency and packet loss was due to a faulty router in London. The router is now being addressed by their international partner in that region, and MTN are also implementing changes to allow for normal services to resume.

They have already restored partial service through alternative routes, and they've assured us that full service will be up and running as quickly as possible.

Thanks for the feedback this time of night. Already getting much better speeds!

Afriman, please explain why a problem in London causes local issues, d4zza gets great speeds in Durban (where I assume he stays) and pathetic speeds to Cape Town and Joburg. I stay in Joburg and I had the same results, 8Mpbs to Joburg servers and 0Mbps to Cape Town and Durban. Think MTN is pulling the wool over Afrihost's eyes and we feeling the brunt of it.

I still think MTN's routing for the new IP ranges is completely cocked up, and I think it's entirely possible that a broken router in london can destroy the routing tables here.

you think it's possible or 'not' possible .. ??

don't see how it could be, but stand under correction

As far as I am aware, local services should have been unaffected. Personally was running on my capped account all night, was still able to use Facebook and Twitter - though noticeably slower than usual. Local sites like MyBB seemed to be working as normal for me.

The issue was definitely in London, cos once they resolved it latencies dropped immediately and then steadily improved to normal levels. As to the intricacies of routing etc. I couldn't say. Again, for me US sites like Washington Post and The Onion were working perfectly, BBC and The Times in UK were sluggish. Gaming would have been affected, Battlenet servers are mostly in EU. This affected us mostly because it impacted WACS connectivity, but the issue was not on the cable itself. Switching to redundancy would still have presented the same issue.

possible. Not sure what internal routing protocol MTN are using, but injecting some faulty routes into the tables could destabilise things quite badly.
Just use a europe based lookingglass to traceroute to an afrihost adsl IP address and tell me that routing looks 100% right...

what is the afrihost smtp?

do i need to authenticate with my uncapped login?

Oh ffs. 6 hours to download 400MB file on 10Mbps capped account.

Lesson learnt. Lost 2 clients already due to giving them bad advice. Some MD's expect services to get fixed not replaced 2 months after implementation. Wonder if anyone cares that this leads to retrenchments. Can only hope the innocent afrihost employees are spared "right sizing" due to the rate of cancellations.

Nah, I've dealt with a lot of Afrihost staff. Trust me when I say they have a lot of techs employed there who seem to have missed their calling in life, as crash test dummies for instance.

My account is back to being unuseable. Happened on cue at 08.30 this morning.

Came back to life some time during the night, after 23.00 when I went to bed. It was working just fine when I got up at 04.30.
