Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Not sure why you started getting slow speeds on the 1st, demand has only started getting very high since this week. All Uncapped accounts were virtually unshaped throughout December. QoS was still in place, but with ample bandwidth and low demand for real time services, I think pretty much everyone had a great experience.

Throttling, shaping based on high usage and the whole concept of "naughty corner" is exactly what we are moving far away from. In fact, we'll be publishing stats of what our top bandwidth movers are accessing, which is as much as 2TB in some cases.Where throttle punished the individual user directly, even if network usage is light at a given point, using QoS means that it much more fair, and you can get decent speeds when we have the capacity to give more bandwidth to downloads and P2P.

Even though we ordered more IPC from MTN that we ever had previously when we moved, we quickly figured out that this was not going to be enough if we were going to get rid of throttling and adopt the QoS approach, which is why we immediately ordered additional IPC from Telkom. It's unfortunate that this process has taken so long, but we are only weeks away from this being installed, and when we move from 8Gbps to 13Gbps, we'll be able to present our real vision for our QoS based Uncapped service. With more capacity to go around, as well as local IPC, it's going to be a very different experience.
 
Im literally getting 56k speeds and 1k latency to EU servers from Cape Town. Whats up with afrihost the last 2 days???? Network status is green on site, but its clearly its NOT. :confused:

Was about to go fetch mine from the garage and post a pic of it. Seriously WTF, it really is dial-up. If Afrihost don't sort themselves out by next month, then its MWEB. I cannot afford shoddy service from March when I need reliable internet for my final year studies.
 
I hope that those using up to 2TB are getting their accounts suspended. Sheesh. 2TB is ridiculous. Who downloads that much and what are they downloading?
 
You live in a student complex, get a 10meg line and a wifi router and resell connections to your neighbours? Lol, I wouldn't be surprised
 
That's probably the case, yeah. There is just no way an individual can move 2TB a month. You'd probably have to buy new HDDs every month. :p
 
I would like to see a graph of the correlation between hard drive prices and amount of data moved on uncapped accounts. Drive prices are starting to drop again.
 
14KB/s download speeds on a 2mbit line. :wtf: I finally get the chance to do some downloading this month and this is what i have to look forward to?

edit: Posting this from my FNB account as I couldn't bear to wait 30min to download a 5MB file using my afrihost account...

Edit2: when I went back to using my ah account around 1am then I got full line speed.

Just me or is this uncapped service getting worse with each day? It's after 1am now and my speeds are still crap on a 4mb line. Are we still in peak hours????
 
Okay speeds are back to normal.............. Bl!!dy dog yapping away woke me up. Not my dog.

I must say I since my usage patern has changed and I no longer require to work from home at all this policy seems to be working for me.

BUUUT I still dont think you should have gone for shaping certain protocols for all users when the network gets put under strain. It's not fair to the people that have only downloaded 50mb a month and then gets shaped right back to 2001.
If there are to many people on the network rather go back to the "Naughty corner aproach" as you put it. At least this way a user would know why he is battling. This might take some strain of the network.

Could you also clarify if the network is under strain do capped users also take a hit in performance? I agree it shouldn't be as bad as the uncapped guys but at least spread the issues around a bit.
 
They are just digging themselves a bigger whole demand is not going to drop because my downloads and I am guessing other users are starting to queue up. So instead of doing my 3gb over 24 hrs like any reasonable person would expect from the ISP, I will have to be patient and wait for when they see it fit for me to download.

Also I see that the relaxing of QoS window is getting smaller Thursday it was from 00:00 to 06:00, This morning it was 03:00 to 06:00.

I wish that Apple will release a iOS update now so that some applenista will lose it and take his hand bag and go and slap a few people with it at Afrihost's office.

I'm also starting to fear that I'm living in a parallel universe because I got exactly the same types of speed last night as during the holidays and none of the problems mentioned here.
No problems whatsoever.
