Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Downloading SQL Server from Microsoft now - currently running at 14 KB/sec (kilobytes). Not too fussed about torrents being slowed down but HTTP downloads seriously need to be looked at!!

Lol..not sure..just looked now and it says D: 4.99 k
It's a torrent so I'm imagining that I'm just being throttled although when I was online now, some websites that are picture heavy wont load.

Hahaha lol @ kitchen...well, I guess that's better than this thread being derailed by the bedroom :p

I am also getting almost full line speed on NNTP. The problem is that is actually one of the services that they can shape. It is normal http downloading that sucks big time. Tried to download WinXP SP3 last week and had to use another account otherwise it would have taken days (I am not kidding!). Tried downloading Fedora18 from TENET and even that was ridiculously slow.

Anyway, I am off to try another ISP. Will come back when most of the people in this thread are happy.
 
Afriman, Sydney has given me a specialops@afrihost account while they investigate the issue. Seems to be QoS related. Box.com on my Openweb account was running at 70-300kB/s (bytes) compared to 7-10kB/s on AH
 
So Afriman , what i was talking about is quite evident in the last couple of pages since i have posted. You of course are quite aware of the situation , i dont blame you however. Its your job to paint everything as "perfect" which its far from. Just an uppdate , its 12.40am and my downloads are running at 1/3rd line speed.
 
NZB Downloads trickling down at 40kB/s at just before 23:00 last night.

@Sinbad. I am officially jealous. I wish I could get the same service as you from Afrihost. Its not an exchange or Telkom issue either. Changing to any other account except my uncapped afrihost gives me full speed.

Which news server do you use?
 
What impact does all this have on downloads through the Playstation Network? I'm trying to download a 3.8Gb demo and get about 600Mb a day on my 1Mpps line. The game will be available in second hand bins by the time I'm done. I start the download at 10pm at night and run it until I go to work the next morning at about 5am. How does the priorities on this work, since "gaming" is prioritised? I can accept that it is a download and not playing an online match, but does it make a deference? It's not like it's a torrent or anything.
 
Yes it makes a difference.
Anyway my experience with psn has always been that its horrendously slow on downloads, no matter what ISP you use.

I ended up doing a bunch of hackery involving proxies and local caches to get my gt5 updates done. It just seems the play station downloads at a snail's pace.

Sinbad, I found the same on PSN as well - speed test on PS3 alsways seems to indicate 2/3 of actual speed I get (Edit) on PC - care to share your alchemical sourcery? :)

Basically I'd run the proxy, point my PS3 at it, initiate a download, cancel it, look in the proxy logs for the URL being downloaded, download to PC with a download manager, and then in the proxy software is a way to map a URL to a local file.
Then hit the download again and the PS3 would DL it off my local PC at lan speed.

I know the PSN downloads are slower, I'm not going to argue about that. That being said, I usually get a 2,5 - 3Gb download done by the next morning. I only managed about 1.2Gb over the last two nights. Granted, my line did go down at about 2am this morning and Afrihost has told Telkom about it. But the 1.2Gb is still way to low for about 11 hours worth of downloads.

Agree! - 1.2Gb should be done in just less than an hour on 4Mb/s!

Thanks Sinbad! - Aye, I remember that black magic....Thats what we used to do in the days of 3G connection from a laptop and sharing the wireless connection thereafter with the PS3 - those were the days ;)
