Also, do you need to reset your modem for the new IPC to kick in?

I have not been following this disaster since November when I cancelled. Are you saying they are increasing capacity from 8Gbps to 13Gbps? If that is the case then it is only a 38.46% increase in capacity! Woopty doo! Considering that I was consistently limited to exactly 1/16 of my line speed during peak hours that would not be nearly enough of an increase to satisfy the level of demand for bandwidth they already experienced in November. Time to face the facts - these guys are only in it for the money now

While I share your general sentiment with regards to Afrihost, your calculations are off. 13/8 = 1,625. Or in other words, 13Gbps is 62.5% more than 8Gbps.

Also, while I think it is unlikely, it is entirely possible that the 62.5% extra will be enough to make their service usable again. Roughly explained, Afrihost are running 2 tiers: One for capped users and Youtube/speedtest.net for uncapped users and then one for everything else for uncapped users. It's the latter one that gets throttled to 1/16th speed, and the latter one just gets whatever bandwidth is remaining after tier 1 has been satisfied.

So, long story short, if we assume that Afrihost today have 8Gbps capacity, and 7Gbps of those are used for tier 1, then that means that tier 2 is getting 1Gbps. In that case, after Afrihost's capacity increases to to 13Gbps in total, tier 1 will still only take 7Gbps, which will leave 6Gbps to tier 2, meaning that instead of getting 1/16th speed we would now get 3/8th speed.
 
I see a few posts asking about the IPC going live. At this stage we are still doing some final optimisation, though the IPC is technically already in play. We just want to make sure there are no hitches before we say it's a go! We'll also be monitoring closely in the coming weeks, and tweaking as necessary.

I see some posts talking about throughput. Remember the intention for the Cape Town IPC was primary with regard to latency and pings (especially for gamers and priority real time services) and we believe that most are already seeing an improvement. Throughput is always going to be determined by the priority of the service you're using and the capacity of the IPC at that point. Again, we're deploying more IPC that we ever had in Cape Town than on our previous network, so we feel that once we get a good balance between the capacity and shaping rules, we'll deliver a good experience to all clients in the region.

In answer to another post about how we balance capped and uncapped services, we have to maintain a very fine balance. Obviously we want all our clients to get the best possible experience. However capped clients pay per GB and therefore we must ensure they get the unshaped service they pay for. In general though we actually give a lot more IPC to Uncapped clients, and we are constantly trying to give more without jeopardising capped service and overall network latency.

Oops! my mistake. Well I suppose we should just wait and see what happens and how much of a difference the new capacity makes. The delay in bringing it online after all the promises does not help win back trust however.
 
From where I am, on capped account, I got a 70ms latency improvement to the US. This is on par with MWEB now, youtube videos work fine far more often than on MWEB and it's cheaper.
