Afrihost Vodacom Fixed 5G thread

Had a busy morning so didn't pay attention to my Vodacom connection, however testing it now it's definitely broken again. 😭

Speedtest 1Mbps down and 0.3Mbps up. Latency about 150ms.

Websites also don't load, or barely loads.

I think if this is not resolved within the next day or two I'll have to take it further and demand cancellation without paying the cancellation fee for the router, hell I'll even send the thing back to Afrihost if I have to, this is just poor service levels and Vodacom obviously does not care one bit.

massive packet loss to certain sites:

--- www.salthouseharbour.co.uk ping statistics ---

20 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 90.0% packet loss

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 41.910/47.803/53.697/5.893 ms

We are reviewing the new requests on a case-by-case basis and logging them with Vodacom.
2/3 speed tests fail without question. Web pages load erratically. Sometimes they fine sometimes just loading this mybroadband forum feelings like I'm reliving the Telkom 384kbps days. WAN IP address is constantly CGNAT and can someone at Vodacom please investigate why clients in Port Elizabeth continue to breakout in Johannesburg instead of Cape Town. 60-70ms added on average for a roundtrip to Europe is barbaric.

Is it intermittent or it is the speeds?
It's intermittent, but like 90% not working, barely working. I'm still only using it occasionally to test if it's working, I'm having to use a backup internet for actual internet connectivity in the meantime.

Sites will sometimes load slowly, or time out, streaming sites might load the homepage and then fail to stream when attempting to play a video, etc. Some sites seem to load perfectly fast, other sites won't load at all.

I've tried to do a number of speedtests today and only 1 actually successfully did the test and returned a result.

Exactly the same experience here, but have a feeling Afrihost has given up on resolving the issue, they will blame Vodacom and Vodacom will blame them.

Vodacom has a thing or two to learn from MTN with regards to managing a network, MTN is just superior in every way. Cannot wait to get rid of this certified junk service.

I'm quite interested that it sounded like Vodacom had reverted the changes made the other day, but that didn't seem to resolve the problem? Quite strange.

The reverted change did improve things a tiny bit yes, but the overall issue is that Vodacom just has a very poor quality network, and Afrihost basically has zero control over that.

You can polish a turd but it will still be a turd...

Same I want to cancel, it is going on day 5 , I have 40% packet loss, emails failing to send and download. Had to use a VPN once again to get stability again.

Something tells me it is more Afrihost or the APN. I was up and down until I spun up a VPN to 1.1.1.1 WARP. Ever since then I have had minimal issues and no drops besides the Unifi router telling me the 5G dropped 50 times in one day, I felt none of it. Today packet loss is 40-50% spun VPN all is fine.

It's not just like "the connection is bad/slow" it's traffic to certain websites. Getting a cloudflare verification I'm a human check box to show up on a website took 2-3 minutes, immediately after that I was downloading a 1Gb file at a sustained 15Mb/s. It's the way traffic is routed somehow?

Would you mind sharing some info or a link or something how to set up that VPN please?

Here you go

They have a Windows file just use CMD to register an account and generate a wireguard config. Works on Unifi and Mikrotik but you need to change the wireguard config file and edit out the IPV6 lines.

Hi,

Vodacom and our team have checked the main parts of the network and found no congestion or capacity issues that would explain the traffic drops. At this stage, everything on the core network side appears to be healthy.

However, we are still unable to determine the cause of the connection drops. All affected numbers have therefore been submitted to Vodacom for further investigation.
@Afrigirl - Can we please get an update on this from Afrihost's side? This issue is not fully resolved and Afrihost seems to be MIA?

Hi Afrigirl

Thanks for the reply, connection still is not fine

Red is high packet loss, yellow high latency and blue is just download can be ignored.

Is getting worse

I lost internet completely now so not sure what the above means

Edit : :Latency is 8000ms

What I cannot understand is this is the connection without a VPN

This is with a VPN at the exact same time even YouTube works with so called 26 208ms satellite latency

Pinging 1.1.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 1.1.1.1: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=58

@Afrigirl Surely you can check why this is happening?
