Afrihost Vodacom Fixed 5G thread

@camross007: Where are you moving ?
Hey Jake moved to Telkom LTE. Running the connection via an Xpol-6. If you can get the antenna alignment correct band 40+40 and band 3+40 works like a dream.

Band 40+40 dl 125-150 mbps up 8mbps
Band 3+40 dl 100-125mbps up 22-25mbps

My breakout connection is also in the same town so latency from PE-JHB around 40ms
PE-CPT 20-25ms
PE-London around 175ms

Really bad speeds on during work hours - then recovers - seem like tower is overloaded.

Here are my latest MyBB Speed Test results from my CI/Vodacom 5G service. As you can see from the coverage map there is no 5G Home coverage in my suburb. Speeds do deteriorate when the tower is busy. I have been very happy with the performance over the last 10 months.

Using the MyBB app ...

So I tested out the Afrihost supplied G5TS router - whereas the mc801a had really good signal and speeds, this router can't even pick up a 5G signal. Also Afrihost has locked down the interface so you can't even force 5G. very disappointing experience....

Hmmm, makes me tempted to try out MC801A. I'm also not very impressed with the G5TS router signal and when I plug in external antenna it didn't seem to help either.

It's counterintuitive that a much older router works so much better. I've also tried the nx510v. The MC801A wins each time.

The MC801A uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon X55M chipset which should perform much better than the ZTE chipset in the G5TS. The G5TS is a much cheaper router than the MC801A. I am fairly happy with the performance of the G5TS but if my 5G signal was marginal then it would probably struggle.

Both Afrihost and Cool Ideas should be offering Telkom 5G FWA packages quite soon. The 5G Home FWA products that Telkom is currently advertising have quite generous FUPs up to 2TB so hopefully the AH/CI Telkom 5G FWA packages will also offer something interesting.
