Good morning all you folks :coffee:

I am in need of a new fibre ISP from 1/1/2022 and in a tossup between Afrihost and Web Squad.

I'm looking at a 50/50 to start with and then possibly going to 100/100 or similar. Low latency and good upload speeds are important.

And of course the usual service and such.

What I want to know is anyone here that would like to share their experiences with either Afrihost or Web Squad?

Specifically, around support service, uptime, how many issues you faced in the last 6 months, and would you recommend them?

I am open to other suggestions as well, but going to stay away from the big telcos and related ISPs.

Thanks in advance.

Who is the fibre provider, not the ISP ? If your only choice is Openserve then it will 50/25.
I'm with Afrihost as ISP. And I'm happy with the service and price.

Openserve is 50/50 as of today on new orders and will probably finish migrating all the existing 50/25s to 50/50 within the week.

But yes, good question. Location (and sometimes FNO, based on their backhaul) will have some say on your latencies to different destinations (based on your physical distance from those destinations).

Available to answer any questions you might have about our network as well.

Would not touch AH with a bargepole - can give you a list as long as my arm as to why.

Everybody has different experiences with different service suppliers. I'm just saying what my experience is, your was different. Not picking a fight here.

Vuma. Quite happy with them. I think they had two network issues this year that affected me and both were resolved in under 3 hours.

Other outages I had were core issues on Mind the Speed. They also got them fixed fast. My issue with them though is on price and the principle that a 12.5% increase doesn't sit well with me, will they have the same increase next year again?

My other issue with some of the ISPs is the lock in for 2 years etc and "free to use" routers. But that is me.

AH 50/50 R897.

Is that a lot for you?

R900 seems to be average for 50/50. I am fine with that. I am also considering the price on the 100mbps deals. I see a difference of up to around R200pm on those, so I will be more sensitive on that pricing considering my intention to upgrade to it in the next 4 to 5 months.

Other thing to look at is terms and conditions like the "free installation" and "free to use router" etc. It could lock you in for a year or 2 at a specific ISP. Again I'm not attacking anyone I'm just saying how my evaluation process works for choosing a service provider works.

As some have already said - people generally have different experiences with ISPs. Although I have found that 99% of the time faults are due to the FNO which is where good ISP support comes in handy. I left AH because their support was exhausting to deal with and I always had to nag on MyBB to get proper help.

I've been with @websquadza for over a year (different addresses, always Vumatel) and have NEVER had a complaint. I've recommended them to friends who are on various FNOs who echo the same consistent positive feedback.

Anybody got any updates on this topic, currently deciding between these two myself.

You must remember, 98% of the time the FNO is at fault and not the ISP.

The only things you can judge an ISP on these days is support and cost.

Im perfectly happy with Afrihost on vuma, touch wood, very rarely are their any issues on either end.

Been with AH for almost a decade now and am in the process of moving my active services over to WS. Service so far has been great. It's a smaller company, but has (seemingly) solid service with great reputation amongst some techies and gamers I know.
