Afrihost

I am really most surprised at the intolerant responses listed here regarding what I consider to be a well founded complaint against AFRIHOST. I use these forums to learn about broadband and I have learnt much from generous advice I have received.

But this kind of response does not encourage free discussion and enlightenment of a subject which is most difficult for some.

you haven't actually given any complaint- all you have told us is that afrihost gave you hassles on new years eve, without supplying any details, in fact only Kaufies gave a link to the following complaint...

As I understand it - Afrihost charges R29 per gig and for example R145 for the 5 gig package - which is in effect R58 per gig. Am I correct?

if this is your complaint, then use your calculator- 58*5=R290 not 145
145/5=29 that is still 29 a gig

*Edit* okay just waded through your thread, seems like you had a billing error... that was a little cryptic.
are you sure the extra cash wasnt the telkom line rental charge.

anyway, not sure what the story is, they may be waiting till the end of the month to refund you, or it may take a while to reflect on your account. either way Iv had excellent service from them, so we will see what happens.

To explain to those who have not read all the thread. I claim to have been charged by AFRIHOST R145.00 for gigs I have not used.

I have made many many phone calls and emails to resolve the problem. AFRIHOST WHILE UNDERTAKING TO LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM THEY HAVE FAILED TO DO SO. They have neither returned my calls or replied to my emails concerning this. To me this is unacceptable.

You claim as much....

Yet I've read the other thread and it seem like all is in order... you ordered 5GB on the 28th.. were charged the prorated amount of roughly R18.. and then you ordered 5 topups at R29 per GB...or at least thats how I read it.

This is how I understood it as well.

Still stand with my nomination for this thread, see that it's been seconded, so Galahad, you might win a prize!.

oh okay, looking at my first invoice from them I think I see what happened to you
I signed up on the 2009-09-28. for the 2 gig account and was charged R61.87
(I should have only been charged 3.87 right? because there were only 2 days left in the month)

then looking at my account-

91410 MyConnectivity: 2 GB 2009-09-28 2009-09-30 R 3.87
91410 MyConnectivity: 2 GB 2009-10-01 2009-10-31 R 58.00

They bill you at the beginning of every month, so what they did was charge me 3.87 for the end of sep
+ the normal R58 for the following month

R163 + R29 + R29 + R29 + R29 + R29 = R290 which has been paid for 5 gigs

so you paid
R29 + R29 + R29 + R29 + R29 for DECEMBER topups
and R18 for the rest of DECEMBER
and 145 for JANUARY

Plus R145.00 in December and in January. None of the R145.00 gigs paid for in December were used. Only the Top ups plus a small pro rata amount. That is the nub of the problem. But AFRIHOST's failure to engage on this is in my view worse than the accounting error.

Ok, wait.. now you're confusing the issue I think.

When were you billed and what EXACTLY does the invoice say?

Galahad it's not a pay as you use system - you get billed monthly at the beginning of each month for the following month.
The R145 invoice is for the gigs they have allocated to you for January.

Galahad - I'm curious have they not answered any of your emails, or is it that you're not happy with the answers you got?

The only problem I have with Afrihost is the stilte oor die uncap offers. Apart from that I think the are a great ISP

No wonder Afrihost can’t resolve this. I read the whole tread and it just gives me a head ache. :D Think you are getting confused, you get billed in advance, the bill on the 1st Jan is actually for Jan data.

I agree.

I also after wading thru lengthy poorly explained posts do not get the issue at hand.:confused::confused:

When I had an issue with Afrihost at the start of the month I had dealings with Moshe and the matter was resolved very well within an hour or two.

Afrihost is not perfect but all my dealings with them have been positive (even the hassle turned out positive due to how it was handled) and considering that as an ISP they have only been operating for a few months, I am impressed. I think the loyalty is due to the fact that they are big enough to admit when they have messed up and to learn from their mistakes

AfriHost is still good for me

So... then what the hell is the point of this thread?????

Do you need a way to get your money back? Chat to OutOfTheBox. He wants to sue everyone at Afrihost, probably even the tea ladies.

:D

good. now we can all haz cheeseburgers :D

I guess I am a wee bit late for mine! :(

I nominate this thread for Most Pointless Thread on MyBB - January 2010.

:D ... considering I haven't had a minute's hassle with AfriHost, I might just second this ;)

Think you will have to third it, I am sure it was seconded already! :D

The one support request I did have earlier this month, was answered promptly. And I had emailed accounts, who forwarded my question to their technical department, who answered me, all in the same day. Probably a matter of hours, if I had to work it out. It was a query on past usage, so I didn't expect a 57min. turnaround, don't know what the turnaround time was at the end of the day. But, it was answered to my satisfaction and within a reasonable timeframe. Come to think of this, I should start a thread on this, seen as most of the new threads about Afrihost are mostly baseless complaints.

Exactly. Afrihost came in with their cheap data and everyone jumped on board and started singing their praises. DigiChilli did a similar thing with uncapped but after a couple of weeks very few were still singing their praises. The reason for Afrihost's continued support is that they kept their promises and care about their customers!!

They have not answered my emails or returned phone calls when I explained the problem. Even when they have undertaken to do so.

It's actually very simple - these guys are too busy making money to worry about fixing their problems (Doesn't that sound familiar?? Hallo Telkom!!)

I am still having problems with Afrihost - Hosting services.

Their ADSL though not as reliable as SAIX, gives better average speeds, but jumps in latency cause problems with internet apps, especially games.

One thing is for sure, Afrihost staff get straight A's for friendliness and apparent willingness to sort out the problem, but and this is a big BUT, a pain in the ass BUTT, they don't seem to have the technical know how to sort out problems.

I am now an additional R200 out of pocket after taking Gian's advice to transfer my domain to someone else, another TWENTY or so emails later, it turns out that internet regulations require a period of sixty days to elapse between domain transfers.

After losing my temper after the last debacle, I am trying real hard to be good but I have to say that the situation is now a circus. Great friendly service can only go so far, a lunatic asylum is fully of smiling faces but seriously lacking in sense.

Afrihost has got the hardest part of the business to get right, friendly service, but for the sake of a few thousand rand is going to fail on the basics of having experts on staff.

I guess this is a lesson in life, you can't have perfection without imperfection.

Friendly happy people make lousy technical wizards.
Technical wizards make lousy grumpy people.

And I thought dealing with Telkom got you closer to Buddha.
