Afrihost

Latency should not affect streaming badly. If it does, you need to tweak your PC's network settings to have larger transmit and receive windows.

I can't complain about Afrihost after the MTN Network migration.

I'm getting between 800 - 1020KB/s (that is almost 1MB/s)

Before they were on the MTN Network I didn't have good speeds at all. Only got about 25% of my 10mbps line speed for more than two months. I also wanted to give up on them. In fact I cancelled my account for about 2 days. I got a 7day test account from Mweb that I tried out for those 2 days and then decided I have to go back to Afrihost.

Keep up the good work Afrihost.

Oh, there is one thing. I only wish thay they have a Day-2-Day-Uncapped Account where you can pay a certain amount per day for Uncapped Data. Especially because I can only use my account 3 days a week.

Maybe something like this:

10mbps - R797 / 31 = R25 per day
4mbps - R397 / 31 = R13 per day
2mbps - R297 / 31 = R10 per day

This will be really awesome.

I am totally regretting my move to Afrihost, I am paying for a 4meg line I never ever seem to get speeds more than 0.76. Speed test links me to the midrand server

I have phoned in many times to complain, gets lots of promises but nothing ever seems to get done about it.

And today as with most days you hold on for close onto 25 minutes to get somebody to assist you.

Am I the only one that seems to experience these problems?

Sorry to see some is still having issues, also glad see alot of problems has been resolved with the switchover.

@ Op my personal my experience with Afrihost has been excellent for the past three months.I am from Cape town and did not experience any issues day or night, Is and MTN ,sometimes even maxing my line out on a torrent during business hours.

So yes,I believe it when they say they will sort out their problems, given time. And hope you can hang in a bit longer, plus Afriman always responded promptly when pm'ed(Kudos to Him)

:D

I Am trying to work with a Server in LA, the same one I work with from 10PM to 3AM every day and this is the speed test I am getting to LA on a 4Meg line.

What is particularly strange si I get 2Meg during the day and an order of magnitude less when we are meant to be off peek.

not sure now if the problem is fixed or the traffic has just died off at 2:15am but I currently have 4 sessions going with rapidshare simultaneously and a constant download of 400KB/s.
I am a happy customer again if I am still get this the response tomorrow morning (or later this morning I should say) :)

Cheers
Chris

This is getting beyond silly now.
It would appear that I am getting acceptable, thought now what I was getting, performance during business hours but being crippled after hours. Totally the opposite of what one would expect.
I had great response all day yesterday, but when I tried to do my work in the evening on the Servers in LA I was so crippled that I had to give up. I decided to try again today and it is just as bad.
Here is my speed test to Jhb on a 4Meg Line and an unshaped 4 meg account:

and the speed test to LA, where I have been trying to update a server since 10PM last night:

I need my bandwidth out of hours, I make my living working on US servers at times that suit my american clients so roughly 10PM to 3AM south african time.
Never an issue on IS but since this switch over I have been crippled in off peek time.
If the rules and the packages have changed then they need to let us know so that I can decide weather to cancel before the 24th.
This now it's good / now its bad and comments about "small minority" are not helpful.
The status page has resolved next to the entry about Cape Town, so why are cape Town users still getting less than 25% capacity locally and less than 10% internationally?

Not good enough Afrihost.

My downloads run at a constant 425kB/s which I last experienced with saix.

The move to mtn has improved my experience to the excellent category but my issues with IS were mild and limited to slight slowing in the day.

@AfriMan..... from what I can gather, all those on Afrihost in Joburg are happy, yet all of us anywhere outside of Joburg are getting poor pings, and poor and VERY inconsistent speeds (especially on Google Services), and should rather move to another ISP?

Please give us any news about how aware Afrihost are aware of the problem affecting Cape subscribers, and how soon they plan to do something about it, should I stick it out past the 24th into another month or not?. I have always found Afrihost's support top notch, but it seems like once again, the product cannot live up to the standard of the support =(

I'm on a capped afrihost 50GB account and bandwith and latency during the day to all servers including those in South Africa are horrible.

@AfriMan

When will the shaping of these accounts during the day be stopped or at very least be relaxed to the previous IS levels? It does of course say that the account is unshaped on the website...

I for one put in my cancelation at the beginning of the month, i was fed up with poor speeds, on torrents i could not get higher than 20KB – 30kb on a 1mb line, after the MTN switch im not getting below 80kb and averaging at 90kb – 100kb
I canceled my Cancellation and could honestly not be happier :D

Apologies for not doing this sooner.

Afri Man thanks buddy my problem was resolved couple of hours after raising to AfriMan

I am now incredibly happy

Thanks once again

We've implemented some routing changes which have largely alleviated the problems and brought things within acceptable levels. But we'll keep pushing until we can get the best possible performance until the IPC goes in for CPT
