Afrikaans Spell Checker for Google Chrome Hack!

Hi guys

I recently got really frustrated with Google Chrome not having a Afrikaans Spell Checker. So after some googling I found a method where you can override the dictionary of another language with a Afrikaans one!

I choose to override the German dictionary, here is how you do it on Windows XP:

1. Download the Afrikaans dictionary here.
2. Close Chrome.
3. Browse to "C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUser>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\Dictionaries\".
4. Unzip de-DE-1-2.bdic into the above directory.
5. Open chrome again and navigate to this thread.
6. Post a reply to this thread and right click on the text area.
7. Go to "spell-checker options" -> "Language settings..." in the pop-up menu.
8. From the "spell-checker language:" drop-down select "German - Deutsch".
9. Now it should check your words in the text area against the Afrikaans Dictionary.

Here how to for Ubuntu (10.10) using Chromium (but Chrome should be similar)

Note: I copied to "Dutch - Nederlands", since I use the German speller from time to time and don't want to overwrite it.
(You may need to enable Dutch in the Tools menu first to be able to do this)

1. Download the Afrikaans dictionary here and unzip is to ~/Downloads (where ~ is your home folder)
2. Close Chrome.
3. Run "cp ~/Downloads/de-DE-1-2.bdic ~/.config/chromium/Dictionaries/nl-NL-1-1.bdic"
(Note: The current version of Dutch is 1-1, so copying to 1-2 will result in chromium adding it's own dictionary anyway)
5. Open chrome again and navigate to this thread or to any text entry box.
6. Go to "spell-checker options" -> "Language settings..." in the pop-up menu.
7. From the "spell-checker language:" drop-down select "Dutch - Nederlands".
8. Now it should check your words in the text area against the Afrikaans Dictionary.

BTW. I hoped to just use Afrikaans, which is on the list of languages, but the dictionary lists are hard-coded in Chromium/Chrome, so if you really want it to be Afrikaans, you'd have to change the sources and compile your own code. Not too difficult, but needless to say, if an update becomes available you'd have to do it again.

Don't hack - get the thing fixed

I've reported this bug:

This is a request to get the Chrome devs to use the hunspell spell checker that Translate.org.za releases for Firefox and OpenOffice.org (Chrome uses hunspell)

Why they can't use the hunspell dictionaries that are already on Ubuntu is another question.

So please stop hacking and add your 10c to the real solution at the bug above ;)

Dit lyk die location van die dictionary geskyf het in windows 7.

Copy die file in C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserProfile\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\Dictionaries

Dit lyk of dit werk. Ek is nog n stap nader om oor te slaan na chrome toe vanaf firefox.

Enige idee waar die "language file's" in google chrome op die Mac is ?
