Microsoft research shows using AI could be making people dumber

There is only so much thinking most of us can do in our heads. Try dividing 16,951 by 67 without reaching for a pen and paper. Or a calculator. Try doing the weekly shopping without a list on the back of last week’s receipt. Or on your phone.

By relying on these devices to help make our lives easier, are we making ourselves smarter or dumber? Have we traded efficiency gains for inching ever closer to idiocy as a species?

Duh, obviously. Critical thinking becomes secondary. But it depends on what type of application we are talking about, doing research, yes, AI will dumb you down. However, analysing big data and identifying trends, very useful and powerful beyond human capability.

I find the even kids are very sceptical of the AI results they get - so I don't think its actually heading in this direction.

I think the more intrusive AI is the more people will value a more human approach.
