OK, so we have a room above our garage... It gets pretty hot because the slate roof is really close above it.
It's a 7 meter by 7 meter room.
So I got quotes from two installers...

A) 1 x 24,000 BTU Midea Neola Fixed Speed Including pipes, brackets, PSU and Installation = R16,290.00
B) 1 x 24,000 BTU Midea Neola Inverter Unit Including pipes, brackets, PSU and Installation = R20,045.00

C) 1 x 18 000 BTU Non inverter midwall split will be R11 934.88 incl VAT
D) 1 x 18 000 BTU Inverter midwall split will be R15 292.87 incl VAT

So here are my questions...

1) The second guy doesn't specify the make of Air Conditioner, is that a problem, or are all these things the same?
2) Why would I need the inverter unit? To save power?
3) But I heard that the frequent power fluctuations and outages can damage the inverter units in Gauteng?
4) Are these prices OK?
5) Is an 18K or a 24K unit enough for that room?

I would say 24000 btu.

Inverters are much cheaper to run and a bit more futureproof but either will work.

But I heard that the frequent power fluctuations and outages can damage the inverter units in Gauteng?

We have a couple at the factory, going strong after around 5 years and no issues, even with eskom and us losing phases and db issues inbetween.

Just asked a guy, says they installed them with stabilisers.

If the room gets hotter than a normal room you need the 24 to compensate.

Or get insulation and the 18 will be more than enough and it'll be more comfortable all year and not so costly on electricity.

I was also told that inverter units are susceptible to failure due to current fluctuations, not sure if true or if the profit margin is higher on the non-inverter.

Very happy with these guys.

We have also used http://www.moyoair.co.za/index.php/gallery - their website looks dodge but their prices are very good with neat installations and they offer 5-year warranties, provided you use them to service the aircons annually at R300 per device.

Also, don't be bounded by the back-2-back installation limitation. Both these companies charge R150 per additional meter of piping over the standard 3M that comes with each aircon so have them fit the compressors where you want it where the vibration and/or eyesores will be avoided.

Inverters will save power but usually only see savings if its run for many hours a day (like server rooms, offices etc).

AUX is an excellent brand and in my view comparable to major brands like LG. Have a LG and AUX . AUX does as good a job, if not better (and much cheaper).

Insulate first. Regulate temperature second. You also want an aircon that won't be so expensive that you will be scared to use it. Check out power consumption of some of the Japanese units like Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic. Also do consider that the cheaper units can make a real racket.
I had LG's at home, Panasonic at the office. You cannot even compare the 2, completely different level.
