Air Conditioners

Thanks, leaning towards the Jet Air, price wise makes sense. Also wont be in our place beyond 6 months so dont want to spend too much on a Samsung or other popular name brands.

I've had continued good service from George from XactAir http://www.xactair.co.za

We have 3 Jet Air units at home and got a few bigger ones at the office and all have been trouble free.

Enjoying my Sammy Maldives 18000 btu in my largish bedroom. Ice cold in a few minutes and noise free. Done a while back by Absolute Chilled for around R13k with a 5m pipe extension and trunking.

Where can one buy a good cheapish ceiling cassette AC?

Our two National Matsushita's have not been working for about 13 years.

Hi All,
Looking at installing a Jet-Air 12000 BTU inverter air-conditioner. Does anyone have any experience with these units?
How do they compare to a similar Samsung unit in terms of power usage / reliability?

I have the unit, its been running since since Feb 2018. Hasnt had any issues. I cant compare it to anything else.

I did feel like if i put in on Auto mode at say 24 degrees, that it should keep the room at exactly 24, but its not 100% in that regard.

Its a chinese brand, you wont find tons of material or support online - so for anything i need to call the people i bought it from (like i wasnt sure about some setting). They service it every 6 months too. Has a 5 year warranty on the external unit if serviced.

For what its worth the installation guy say he feels its a solid brand, and he also installs all other makes.

Out of curiosity what is the cost to service an aircon?

Thanks for the real world feedback, much appreciated!

You'll okes can't take the heat. We men just walk around in our birthday suits at home. The office is a bit more difficult but it can be done without getting a lawsuit.

Also have this one as well as the 24000btu unit. Works great and haven't had any issues. Installed a year ago with first annual service coming up next month.

The new units have built in WiFi. Missed out on these by a couple of months so make sure you getting the new unit and not old stock.

Factor in a call out fee. Closer to R1k all in.

Thats correct, R450 is just the actual service, callout must be added.

For my unit they service every 6 months - just did the service at the end of August and its was really needed, the filters were clogged, the amount of dust that came out the exterior unit was insane

Resurrecting old thread. How did you guys install the vent in the usual SA outward opening windows? I can't just push out a section of the window and replace it with a perspex pane as it's a one-piece window

2021 bump

Looking for an aircon in Sunninghill for a room thats 14sqm

As we approve Black Friday, a few questions.

1) What brands would you recommend
2) I am probably looking at a 12000btu, do you suggest an inverter or non inverter
3) How much do the services costs and how often

Thanks

Services should cost less than R1000 per unit and are recommended every 6-12 months depending on conditions and how often it's used. The more often it's serviced, the lower the service cost. Usually it's just a clean and check. The inverter / no inverter question is a good one. Inverter units are claimed to be more efficient but it depends on actual running time. It could take some time to recover the upfront costs of an inverter unit in most home cases. If you're running the aircon a lot then maybe consider an inverter unit, if it's for a couple of hours here and there then a regular unit is cheaper up front and cheaper to repair.

Inverter units are also more susceptible to damage from load shedding unfortunately.

I would say 9000 BTU is fine for 14 sqm: https://www.airconexperts.co.za/btu_calc.html

Brand wise: Samsung, LG, GMC are all good.
If you are DIY inclined you can do the basic service cleaning filters and radiators yourself.

  1. turn off power
  2. Remove and wash and dry filters
  3. Brush and hose down outside unit
  4. Spray bathroom anti fungal/anti mold on the interior unit radiator
  5. let it all dary
  6. put back
  7. stand far back and power on

Regass should not be required unless you have a leak

Hi all

I'm looking for AC's, prefer inverter models, probably Samsung.
Looking at the AR7500 range, can anyone comment if the "wind-free" feature is worth it or just a gimmick?
It does come with the Samsung Buy&Get Promo (R3k) which I will make use of, so net not far off from the AR4500 range.

Also struggling to decide on sizes, I have 3 bedrooms:
~14.5m2 that gets VERY hot - happy with 12k BTU here, but will 9K BTU suffice? Price diff is only R500 on ~R14k total with install.
~12.2m2 that gets quite hot - 9k BTU would be enough, but again for R500 more is the 12k BTU better? I've come across mixed opinions on what is actually better for this room size.
~26m2 doesn't get as hot as the other 2 - would a 12k BTU be enough here even though it is recommended up to 24m2 (sometimes 25m2)? Big price jump to the 18k BTU, so will have to settle for lower range/brand if that size is needed.

Will appreciate any comments/suggestions.
Thanks!
