It's been crazy hot and I am looking for a good air-conditioner. What is a good brand 12000btu air-conditioner and which installer in the East London area gives the best prices?

there is no good brand 12000btu aircon unless you plan to cool a bathroom stall...

Samsung and lg make some decent stuff. And 12000btu is good enough for normal sized rooms in my experience. For a more open space though like open plan lounge and dining room you will definitely need to double that.

Amen to that, although my experience is with a 9000 btu portable unit.

It does a grate job at chowing electricity and removing humidity, but that's about it.

Aircon also has to work much much harder to cool the room.
More work = more maintenance, more repairs, more hassles.

If the compressor is a reputable (Toshiba, Gree, Carrier, Mitsubishi) make you can buy an e-cheapo branded unit, non-inverter type. The only problem is the cheap aircons generally have an ugly indoor unit (midwall-split type). I've personally owned both Infinity and Jet-Air branded aircons (Toshiba compressors), both bought from a installer who offered 4-year warranties on the compressors provided I have them cleaned/services annually for R250 a service.

As for the best prices - I found that calling refrigeration installers as you see their bakkies generally results in good deals. Buying from retailers like Game typically does not include installation and you end up paying R5000 for a 12000btu aircon + R1500-R2000 back-to-back installation from the installer, whereas if you buy the aircon from the installer, you can get away paying R4500 (or less) with installation.

Game has a 12000btu Defy midwall split with installation for R5000 on promo this week. 2 year guarantee.
Makro has a Samsung 12000btu for R4400 (promo) excl. installation or Goldair 12000btu for R4000 excl. installation.

Sorry, how's that? A 12 00 BTU is specified for a room between 18 and 24 sqm. I installed one for my daughter's bedroom and on testing, got that room freezing cold.

See my post above yours.

And? You implied before that post, that a 12 000 BTU will not cool down any room bigger than a bathroom stall...and that is incorrect.

No I said that unless you plan to keep a bathroom stall cool there is no good 12000btu unit.

Fine for a year or 3 then the fun starts, usually in the middle of a heat wave.

I'm picking up from this old thread, but anyway...

I want to install an air conditioner in my lounge. My dining room (a bigger room than the lounge) is open plan from the lounge, as such, but the entrance between the rooms is quite wide (probably two standard doorways and there is no door.
Do I need to get an aircon big enough for the entire floor space, or will a unit installed in the lounge cool that room enough?

It'll cool both rooms but you'll need 18-24k btu. Might work out cheaper to have 2x 9000 or 12k btu installed, one in each room. The best thing would be to speak to an installer and have them take a look.

I don't necessarily want to run both at the same time whenever I'm in either room.
I would like to ask an installer, but don't want to waste their time because I'll be buying the AC unit from Makro with my ebucks discount, and using a recommended installer (so as not to void my warranty)

The trouble is the one room will be cold (where the unit is) while the other will be somewhat cool.If the area is closed off,ie no passages all doors closed etc, then it should be fine.It sounds like it'll be 20-30m2?

Get the biggest you can afford if you decide on only getting one.For a single average room 9000btu is more than enough but it gets tricky with open areas.

It might be worth giving an installer a call and asking what they recommend, basically a quote. It won't cost you anything and you'll get (hopefully) some good advice.Dont feel bad about asking, you aren't obligated to buy from them.

Square meters of the room x 600 gives a indication, but then other factors come into play like:-
open plan
large windows
roof insulation
electronic goods in the room
flooring
etc
Rather get a 12000BTU than a 9000BTU because the price diff is minimal.
