Aircon for car

My car is mechanically fine and has low KMs on the clock, but the body work is a bit messed up since it was used pretty much like a farm bakkie (before my brother got his Hilux). I would definitely not get a good trade in price :(

No, he is talking about these: http://www.coolacar.co.za/

That is evaporation cooling not a real air conditioner. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporative_cooler

If you are talking about the standard ATOS air conditioner it's still just a normal air conditioner but with a significantly lower BTU rating, but if you know of something else, please post here I'd like to explore it for interest sake.

Isn't this like that air coolers you get for the house? If so, it's trash.

Easiest option is to get a Corsa aircon, from a Corsa C, they can be had for as low as R2000 second hand. Then you just need someone to install it and also get the Corsa B with air conditioning's center console for the air conditioning button/heat setting combo adjuster button (it's the same as the rear window heater you pull it out to turn on the A/C). The Corsa C air conditioner is better than the Corsa B. But some stuff has to be taken from the Corsa B.

Exactly!

But the ATOS does have a normal air conditioner driven by the crank shaft and everything, it's just very low BTU rating which means it pretty much sucks unless you take long journeys. Also saps power from the already small engine :(

Are you sure it will work using the Corsa C unit in the B ? This is a 2005 model B, first ones with the "clear headlights" and colour coded bumpers as standard.

I know how to fit it but it depends on the mechanic because it's a bit of a get parts here and get parts there job if you catch my drift.

The simplest option obviously is to get a Corsa B air conditioner and fit that. Join the OpelOwnersForum and ask in the Naturally Aspirated Forum or optionally you can buy a air conditioner from the Corsa B in the For Sale section, PM Supieman or Blaco, both of them regularly strip cars and sell of parts, it's likely they'll have some air conditioners for sale. You can also post in the Looking For section.

It's easy getting your hands on the A/C the problem is getting someone to install it.

And just a heads up the Corsa B air conditioner in it's standard trim isn't the most awesome unit ever. On setting 3 with it on, it'll cool you down so you don't sweat but it won't be cold, just cool (I'm not hot but I'm not cold either if you catch my drift), that's if you are in heavy traffic. On the highway it'll be nice and cold. This is in Pretoria btw. it's really hot here.

Still it's a hell of a lot better than the heat outside. I'm not sure how other small car air conditioner are but my moms Mercedes can make me shiver from the cold in summer if I set it to max and keep it there for 10 minutes.

Funny thing is, I sold that car so long ago I completely forgot it did not have aircon. Wonder if the advertiser was thinking I would sit without aircon for four years waiting for his post to come and save me :D

Maybe he was trying to be nice in case you ever get another one without aircon :D

For the 6 months that we had one back in 2010 it was a fairly good ride, but only after spending a few thousand on better wheels/tyres and sound system. In the end you can get a lot more car for your money if you buy something newer, plus those engines they had in the Lite was not good with fuel economy and had plenty of issues as they got older.
