+1 Dammit! I'm flying tomorrow. JNB > JFK (quite long). I hope they don't put me next to barry white. They should just charge per KG over and above say 100KG at most. That should be a more than acceptable average.

No, certainly not, but they will use ANOTHER airline that don't do this. HENCE, LESS MONEY FOR THEM - they give a flying fluck whether you are sitting next to a fat guy / baby / pregnant woman / sicko / murderer as long as the seats are full.

SAA Decides to charge according to weight, Heavy dudes pay more, thinner people start saving.
Do you think any fat guy will fly with them if they can fly British Airlines for no extra cost??? do you think SAA wants to lose money by charging thinner people less, and only seeing thin people fly with them?

ok so say SAA implements it.. now BAA has all the fat people. Me as an average guy is not going to want to fly on BAA so that i don't get squashed or eaten.
Therefore SAA will be cornering a market, and saving on petrol
as i learnt in economics, opportunity cost.

Not to mention, there are more skinny people flying than obese people, so sacrificing say...5% of your passengers, you're going to get a fair amount more skinny people flying your airline. It's all in the ratio's.

Yes we all know most thin ppl will fly SAA then, but how long would SAA be able to keep up, as everyone is now paying less. it's like they inadvertantly just made all their flights cheaper - IE: Not going to happen
and that ratio is going to work in their favor? if you say 95% are skinny, then WHY on earth would they wanna make it cheaper ?? LOL you guys can't seem to think properly today. think about what you are saying, pleaaase?

Firstly, the original article didn't mention thinner people paying less. Average people pay a normal rate but obese people pay more. Simple as that. The same way you pay more for excess baggage. If all the airlines implement this, people would have no choice. Besides that, a small aircraft carrying less weight will most definitely use less fuel, which means they will save money.
From the article: "Southwest Airlines was flying 72 seconds slower on Los Angeles flights, saving 8.7 gallons (32.9 litres) of fuel for each of the airline's four daily non-stop flights on the 2 232km route"
Now, if they save that much by flying a tiny little bit slower, imagine what they can save if they carry less weight! Less weight = less fuel on takeoff and a quicker stop on landing, saving wear-and-tear on components like brakes, tires and shocks. I reckon the difference between the obese customers they lose and the savings will at the very least even-out.

Even if it's not cheaper, I'd fly with them if it guarantees that I won't get squashed in my seat. Have you ever been on a 13+ hour flight when half of you feels like it is being enveloped by someone else's rank body?

Your 'idea' doesn't wokr... as mentioned, most people are in the normal weight, or at least fit in their own seats... there will be hardly any loss, and lighter passangers, means less fuel = cost saving.
It all depends on exactly how the pricing will work.
I agree with the concept, but it just wouldn't work. (The Fat boycotting an airline, the scales that need to be implemented, the online ticket purchase "type in your weight" and validate at airline system, imbarrisment of women / fat ppl / etc /etc)
Also, the statistics arent 95% thin and 5% Fat....ROFL

It's not 5% of people that's overweight, it's 5% of people who travel via airplanes and can't fit their rears in their seat and their seat alone. And that's a completely fictional percentage. It would most likely be more, but not MUCH more (unless we're in America, that is).

Just as bad: People who can fit their rears into a seat but require 3 seats width for their shoulders.
Had a flight next to a MaMa from J'burg to London ona 100% full plane. The option was suffer in silence or don't go to London.
