Samoa Air has become the world's first airline to implement "pay as you weigh" flights, meaning overweight passengers pay more for their seats.

"This is the fairest way of travelling," chief executive of Samoa Air, Chris Langton, told ABC Radio. "There are no extra fees in terms of excess baggage or anything – it is just a kilo is a kilo is a kilo."

Samoa Air uses those small planes, which makes sense to charge as per weight,
airlines with big planes, I don't think it'll be practical. Besides, how would you book tickets online and stuff?

Have scales @ the check in counter. If you are more than what you in putted on the website when booking the balance gets charged to your credit card?

A new design by aircraft interior manufacturer B/A Aerospace lets airlines squeeze in an extra row of seats, by reducing the space in the lavatory.

The move may be a wee bit annoying for passengers. It means the standard 3ft by 3ft (0.9m by 0.9m) economy class lavatory will become a luxury of the past.

Delta Air Lines will be among the first to have the smaller lavatory, and those 737-900s will get an extra four seats due to the sacrifice.

I'm aware of that. Not sure why Sumo always comes to my mind when Samoa is mentioned. I think it might have something to do with my childhood.

well this should be interesting i wonder how many airlines will follow, i guess a few months from now if this project is successful.

No matter if a prop or turbofan powered airliner....weight is very important when it comes to cost. Why airframers trying to get as much as possible composite materials into their new designs to get the weight down.

Obviously, but the economies of scale wouldn't translate terribly well from a Cessna 172 to an Airbus A380. You'd be able to take the former as hand luggage on to the latter and not shift its balance around too much.
