Airlines push to allow cell use

Also BA think people are as stupid as planks: On the last flight they said:
No cellphones, even if its got flight mode. This included blackberries and iphones.

They should allow cellphones in flight mode only.

I once spent a night in hospital with a businessman in the next bed. Calls & SMS every 20 mins straight through the night with the most annoying ringtone every. One person. A plane full...yoh....someone will end up with a phone where the sun don't shine...

Fact remains: people don't always switch them off. I have heard SMSes coming through to phones left (on) in bags in overhead lockers. Plane didn't crash.

so far a plane hasn't crashed, but I don't want to be on the first one that proves the point :p

February 2011 5,000,000th Emirates passenger switches on their phone in-flight

Never mind that here is a short list of Airlines that allow for you to make calls/get emails on your cell using gprs/GSM

Code:
    Australia Qantas
    Australia V Australia
    Brazil TAM Airlines
    DenmarkNorwaySweden SAS
    Egypt Egypt Air
    France Air France
    Germany Lufthansa
    Hong Kong Cathay Pacific
    Hong Kong Dragonair
    Hong Kong Hong Kong Airlines
    India Kingfisher Airlines
    Jordan Royal Jordanian
    Kuwait Jazeera Airways
    Kuwait Wataniya Airways
    Libya Afriqiyah Airways
    Malaysia Air Asia
    Malaysia Malaysia Airlines
    New Zealand Air New Zealand
    New Zealand Air New Zealand
    Oman Oman Air
    Pakistan Air Blue
People's Republic of China Shenzhen Airlines
    Portugal TAP Portugal
    Qatar Qatar Airways
    Republic of Ireland Ryanair
    Russia Aeroflot
    Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabian Airlines
    Singapore Singapore Airlines
    United Arab Emirates Emirates
    United Arab Emirates Emirates Airline
    United Kingdom British Airways
    United Kingdom British Midland Airways
    United Kingdom Virgin Atlantic

If a plane was going to fall out of the sky because of cell phones it would have happened by now.

Like I said as normal SA will fall behind

I know for a fact cellphones won't disrupt plane equipment, but for long distance flights, I'd prefer as much silence as possible.
Maybe the announcement should change from "please switch off" to "switch off or put on silent".

Ja well, all good and fine, I still don't like the idea of having to sit next to some prat talking about how kak his day has been all the way from Durbs to Jozi :p

Easy answer, allow only for gprs/3g traffic.

Oh forgot, they use roaming, so if someone wants to talk, he is going to have a nice account waiting for him :)

I don't believe that the phones are a danger, but I am also sure that passenger abuse could be an issue.

Maybe just allow phones to be used in flight mode - my last four phones have had that feature.

Yeah, I agree with most of you. Its bad enough being in a lift with someone on their cellphone...let alone hundreds in a plane!
Just keep the ban, for peoples sanity.

Jeesh, read the article FFS. All they're asking to do is lift the moronic CAA ban on using cellphones in flight mode, not to allow full usage of the cellphone.

and once everyone sees that works fine, then what's next? it's a progression.

I think you need to consider the social aspect of using a cellphone on an aircraft. Especially in economy class, you are already almost on your neighbour's lap, then you still have to listen to his side of a cellphone call, ugh.

i don't mind putting my phone to flight mode.
just don't lie to me and tell me it will interfere with the avionics.

On cell phone, certainly not..
But try 500 cellphones in a 200m area.. There'll be some interference somewhere, that I guarantee you.

Ja vir selfone op vliegtuie, maar (nog) nee vir bel

For those who have not yet seen the news:

Mnr. Kabelo Ledwaba, BLO-woordvoerder, het gister gesê hoewel die aansoek om oproepe te maak van die hand gewys is, mag selfoongebruikers op plaaslike vlugte vir die volgende ses maande hul fone se ander funksies benut.
From Beeld

So you can use your phone in flight mode, but not allowed to phone while in air. This is a huge step forward!

+1
People tend to get lots of calls/sms's while on flights. Those "are you here yet?", "is the flight delayed?", "can't wait to see you"...type messages and calls.

not all 500 passengers will be making a phone call at the same time. get your head out of your ass, nor wil all 500 passengers be utilizing thier gsm radios at the same time. come on guys really now...

Esp with roaming charges.... Vodacom & MTN would be to happy if they did
