Can't be good for tourism.

News24

According to the American Embassy, 14 Americans in the past 12 months have been robbed at gunpoint after landing at the OR Tambo international airport in Kempton Park, Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The embassy said that gangs of robbers targeted people arriving at airport and robbed them either at their destinations or on the way to their destinations.

The embassy's website warned that organised criminal gangs were targeting visitors and residents at shopping malls and at the OR Tambo airport.

"When a victim is identified he or she is followed to his or her destination and robbed, usually at gunpoint, though the use of violence is generally limited to those who offer resistance."

What i cant understand about all of this is that the criminals are actually getting their dirty paws on customs declaration documents.... now this just smells of an inside job. These tourists are targetted according to what they declare, and the airport police still deny the possibility of an inside job?
Bollocks...

Its because of the ppl they hiring, there is zero backround check when a security company hires a guard, as long as he has papers hes fine. Its easy to get a minimum wage worker to give you info for some cash, especialy in africa. The airports are not the only places affected, banks are also being hit like this, if you want to make a withdrawel of 50K + you need to give 24hours notice to the bank, its happened to ppl i know and they robbers knew exactly what they had.

If this happened to you would you bother going through the BS of reporting it knowing that it would be merely going through the motions and has no chance of any effort being made to investigate the issue.

Gauteng national police spokesperson Superintendent Vish Naidoo announced last Monday that, despite a spate of similar robberies, there was no evidence a syndicate was targeting air travellers.

Who gives a **** whether it's syndicates, it's CRIME and you need to get to the bottom of it !!!!

The African experience begins at the Airport - now that is service!

Here's an idea - set a trap. Have a police officer "land", declare wads of cash and equipment, and then drive to a "safe house".

Oh - wait, that is against the criminals constitutional rights.

crime at or tambo

OR tambo is full of criminals .Right from the loading bay ouk that slices bags to find the odd camera, to the SAA ticket counter salespeople that cancel your ticket at the last minute and then sell it to desperate travel agents ,to the big managers that put a blind eye to everything his friend at the ticket counter does.

Rule of thumb

Never fly SAA
Never check in a fabric bag / suitcase

Hopefully SA wont be the next Nigeria .

Ontgroening for tourists.

No worries there. SA is a net importer of criminals while Nigeria is a net exporter of criminals.

Stellenbosch Vice can handle that one, and beat the perps up as well.:)
