Can you use airtags to track a vehicle?

Nobody's going to give you an answer until we hear the back story.

I have a driver for my business ... just wondering if putting an airtag on his keys will help me track him.
I have one on MY keys - but it's only used for finding them in the house. I've only just started using it, so I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice.

Airtags ping off of nearby apple devices for location. Depends how many devices you think will be within proximity while driving. Might only get location data when stationary again.

If he has an iPhone sure, otherwise it will be hit and miss.

Google around a few local publications have done stories in the effectiveness of AirTags in SA, including tracking a “stolen” bike.

Spoiler, it was pretty **** inner city and borderline useless out of it with pings every hour or more.

That was my worry... my airpods were stolen recently, and are pinging every few days - but in a very dodgy part of town. They haven't moved, so i think they were tossed in an open plot. I'm dying to go check, but nervous to go on my own. I guess the technology is the same then?

The tags are a bit better feature wise, but they rely on the presence of iPhones, either they cannot ping, they have no network connection of their own.

Why not use “normal” tracking companies for that? C Track is awfully accurate plus they even give speed, how long you stopped at place, etc. Seems more legit than tracking someone via an AirTag.

^this...or, buy a cheap secondhand iPhone, put a prepaid sim in it, and hide it somewhere in the vehicle, then use Find My on your iPhone to track...just remember to charge the phone often :-)

Not a bad idea at all. I have to sort out a phone so it can run discovery insure’s app.. that will kill 2 birds with one stone :) thank you!

Or an app like Life360 which will work across different phone platforms.

Or just safe yourself all the trouble and ask your husband straight up if he is seeing someone else .

I don’t have a husband.. I have a driver who likes taking the scenic route when he fetches stock. And who goes shopping when he should be working!

Don't forget to put the phone on silent mode.

You could also connect it to a powerbank so that you don't have to recharge it often.

Maybe just say something about needing to track vehicles for whatever reason...should be sufficient to get them to stop the detours until you get a tracker in place.

This way they will KNOW that they are being tracked. (The iPhone/iPad will display a warning that an Apple Airtag is being detected in the vicinity.)

Not sure I understand you…this suggestion is meant as an alternative to an Airtag, so there is no Airtag involved. And the phone is meant to be hidden so nobody will see any warnings whatsoever

My wife took my car keys this morning and this popped up on her phone.

We can both see each other's location via find my phone anyway but it's reassuring that apple will warn you that there is a potential issue.

I would go with the galaxy smart tag + over airtags because they require an apple device to ping off the location and there are not many idevices in circulation in SA.

*Depending on the area, of course, hopefully, google releases an equivalent because who doesn't have a google account.

Really? Given the OP is an iPhone user what benefit would that provide?
