AKT: Amazon Kindle Thread

The Wifi is disabled yes. Fully charged it Saturday and this morning it was dead again, didn't even read last night. Should I contact Amazon or the place I bought it from?
Is your Kindle firmware up-to-date? With my K2, upgrading the firmware improved the battery life from about two days to three weeks.

Edit: I just remembered, when I received my kindle I plugged it into a friends pc, because she had a few kindle books. And now my anti-virus says there is a trojan on my kindle. Could this possibly be the reason for the poor battery life?
The Kindle's OS is Linux. The trojan shouldn't do anything to the Kindle, but it will spread when plugged into a win machine. Plug the Kindle into a Linux machine and delete the trojan's files/folders.

How can you get maximum battery life out of the kindle when using for the first time?

My Kindle only came with a USB charger, not really an issue considering the battery life. It is a Kindle Keyboard 3G, average battery life of 2-3 weeks or so.

Have seen the covers available at Incredible Connection, at a premium!.

ah, What does incredible corruption charge for them? Seems I'll be getting the Amazon Kindle this Friday :)

Heh, think the lighted cover was about R800, without the light a few hundred rand less!

I ordered the Kindle AND cover at the same time, they had no issues shipping it then, unless it's a new thing. This was at the beginning of October.

The price for the Kindle AND lighted cover is almost R500 more than my order of the Kindle, lighted covered, delivery (right into my hands! :D), customs fees AND a $50 voucher. I think that the week or so I had to wait, was well worth that difference. There are options if you don't have a CC, if you just look.

Lighted cover sells for R799 at IC, normal cover R499 ... this is for the Kindle Keyboard (aka Kindle 3). Covers for Kindle 4 were sold out so I couldn't check prices.

You can order Kindle device + cover from Amazon only when ordering the Kindle Keyboard ... if you try to order the Kindle 4 + cover it comes up with a warning that the cover can't ship to South Africa (which totally sucks donkey balls). Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire not yet available directly from Amazon (you'll need to order from a third party or use a US postal forwarder)

Kindle Keyboard 3G currently selling at Makro for R1999 which is actually ± R200 cheaper than ordering direct from Amazon.

I got a generic black zip-up felt bag-thing that fits my Kindle 3 perfectly for R5. Not as pretty as a proper Kindle cover and you need to take it out when you want to read (doesn't flip open or anything), but I don't see the point in spending an additional 50% above the cost of the device just for a cover.

Wow... Placed an Intl order on 12th of Dec and received the kindle today...

So far setup is a breeze... :D

Thanks for the suggestion, think the update worked as I am on day 3 and battery is still going strong. So big up, BigAl :D

I have a kindle 3 wi-fi only and also only got a USB cable with it.

I've only ever charged it using the USB cable, but last night I was going to sleep and noticed the battery very low so plugged it into my S2 charger. Nothing happened. Had to leave the laptop running over night in order to charge.

Never thought about it until now, but is this normal? Surely it should charge using normal micro usb from the mains?

I charge my K2 with my SE's charger with no probs. I've also charged my U20i with the Kindle's charger (K2 came with mains charger).

Glad to hear! Let us know how it goes - you should get two weeks at least with normal use.

Does anyone know where you can get a carry case for your kindle? The model "without" the keyboard.

Not necessarily! Remember that it takes two or three charges before a new battery gets up to full performance, AND with a new Kindle on which a lot of books might have been loaded there could be the effect of the notorious 'book indexing' which takes both time and power. So new Kindle owners should not immediately panic if they're not getting the 'advertised mileage'; give it a while to settle in....
