Alcatel Lucent achieve 300 Mbps DSL

300Mbs over copper at a distance of 400m? got me thinking.probably the copper they using for testing is pure because thats the only logical reason*thinking*

1.05 GB would take 28.5 secs...
u will be getting 2GB every minute!

thats so cool!

EDIT: sorry for the double post..bit of a lag in my connection

May as well forget about seeing anything like that in SA any time soon. Telkom don't give two ****s about their copper infrastructure anymore. Most of it has been stolen, they've done too little too late when it comes to precautionary measures, ie alarming the cable route (a simple, effective, and cheap process, really... no excuse besides incompetence), and now they refuse to replace the stolen infrastructure. This is a technology that requires a copper last mile network. Telkom have just made a 5 billion rand contract with MTN for wireless. They clearly don't give a damn about the only thing that they really have a monopoly over and the entire country depends on them for: a functional copper/fixed line last mile infrastructure. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - mark my words: They're in for big **** if they don't sort out the cable theft problem.
Telkom, perhaps you should go back to one of my faults and see why they were cleared with "Problem resolved and Service restored" when nothing's actually been done about the actual fault at all: 2733CRZ270110, 1606CRZ090410, 1457CRZ160410. Those are just the ref#'s from the last 3 months - I could also paste the other 10 which were also cleared since the line went down in March 2008? Why clear the fault if the service is still down? An account for a Telkom line is only credited if it's attached to a fault. These guys are persistent in making me pay for something I'm not receiving? Not only am I not receiving the service I pay for, but I have to sacrifice many hours of my time trying to organize stuff like this with incompetent idiots, using my CELL PHONE, which costs a fortune. Is this really how it's supposed to be? Is this the kind of service Telkom is proud to offer?

Am I just being pessimistic in waiting for all the usual "But I can't even synch at 4Mbps" and "This is imminent/unsustainable" and "It'll never happen in SA" or "This won't happen until LLU! Where is the LLU? Bring on the LLU!" etc comments?

Edit: On a side node, way to go Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, keep up the good work :)

Edit2: Too late, fragtion_ got there first..

300 Megabits per second over just two traditional DSL lines

So that's over 2 POTS.
That means you need to get Tel-f%&ing - kom to come put in another cable, at a ridiculous price, and then pay rental for 2 lines... forever.

i still think copper maintenance is too expensive and unreliable. the future must surely be in fiber optics capable of speeds in excess of 1gb/s. Also the only thing limiting the transfer rate is the speed of light and our method of utilizing light to deliver higher transfer speeds.

+1, forget copper, think fibre :D

Vodacom will claim that their network is upgraded to this speed in June 2011 (although due to "real world" constraints you will still only be able to download at 1 mbps... if you are lucky).

Telkom will upgrade our ADSL network to this speed in 2057 ... three years after the nuclear holocaust.

lol

Remember idsl!
Using 2 idsl lines you could get 256 kbps and that was that state of the art technology 10 years ago.

1000x faster over ten years. This is progress!

um, you mean ISDN? Did we ever have iDSL in South Africa? I had ISDN from 1999 to 2005.

GJ, but future is behind fibre.

Fixed for you.
