Most ADSL installations have a 2-pair cable from the DP to the house (jack). If you only have 1 ADSL service then there is already a spare pair of copper cables to your house.

@fragtion_ : if "most" of the copper cable has been stolen, then why the huge demand for LLU?

No, not quite. The main thing that limits transfer rate is bandwidth. Latency is affected by the speed of light, but over short distances (i.e., the local loop) you are unlikely to notice the difference between fibre and copper i.t.o. latency.

And the bandwidth of fibre is not unlimited. From memory (10+ years now since that High-speed networking module at varsity ...) I seem to recall that the bandwidth of single-mode fibre is around 25 Tbps. That sounds like a lot, but we are actually quite far from being able to achieve that at the moment. Still, 25 Tbps is very impressive compared to copper.
