Alfa Romeo has named its new small SUV the Milano, as a tribute to the company's Italian home city, and confirmed it will reveal the car in April next year.

The new crossover – which appeared for the first time in leaked images recently – takes Alfa Romeo back into the B-segment for the first time since the Mito supermini retired in 2019 and will be the brand's first electric car to reach showrooms.

Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the Milano will be sold with pure-electric and mild-hybrid powertrains, but only the EV is currently planned to come to the UK.

In reference to widespread recent reports that the car would be called Brennero, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told reporters: "As a matter of respect for our history, the SUV will not be named Brennero, as I have read on social media. I told you two years ago that it would not be Brennero."

Alfa Romeo's next car will be called the ‘Milano’

New car will be unveiled in April, with an all-electric alternative also confirmed

Alfa Romeo has revealed the name for its forthcoming new car - the ‘Milano’ - and also announced a 100 per cent electric version will be offered to customers ahead of its full unveiling in April 2024. Perhaps the ‘Berlin’ just didn’t strike a chord with the higher ups?

We jest. This makes perfect sense since Alfa Romeo itself was founded in Milan and therefore a significant portion of its history can be traced back to it, despite its primary headquarters now footed in Turin.

Alfa will hope to build on its strong market growth over the last year, so the Milano will join its current fleet which consists of the Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale, and become the smallest car in its lineup.

Further details are being kept under wraps for the time being, but given the Milano will plug the ‘small car’ gap which Alfa has shied away from since focussing on larger vehicles, we expect it to challenge the likes of the Volkswagen Polo and Fiat 500 in a class which is slowly being squeezed out with every passing year.

Alfa Romeo is going back to its roots, namely the Italian city of Milan - or, as they say in Italian, Milano. For Milano will be the name of Alfa Romeo's next car, its first "Sport Urban Vehicle", which will also be available in a 100% electric version.

The first Alfa Romeo battery electric vehicle will bear the name of the city where the brand was founded on June 24, 1910. The Alfa Romeo Milano will be unveiled in April 2024, where else but in Milan itself.

With the Milano, Alfa Romeo will be re-joining the B segment, which is the biggest in Europe in terms of sales, "with a new proposal that fully embodies the brand's DNA of noble Italian sportiness", the company says.

Alfa Romeo Milano confirmed as new baby SUV launching in 2024

The Milano name has been confirmed for Alfa Romeo’s first compact crossover, which is set to debut in April 2024.

Alfa Romeo refers to the newcomer as a “Sport Urban Vehicle” and it’s set to share its basic architecture with the Peugeot 2008 and Jeep Avenger, and like its cousins the Italian pavement hopper will also be available in a fully electric variant.

But there’s an interesting back story behind the name Milano. Alfa Romeo claims to be honouring its city of origin, Milan, but the last time the carmaker tried to name a vehicle after this district, politics forced a name change at the last minute.

The modern Alfa Romeo Giuilietta hatchback, which replaced the 147 in 2010, was meant to carry the Milano name. According to Automotive News Europe, around the time of its launch the carmaker was busy moving its last remaining Milan-based employees to Turin, where it is now based, and needless to say there was some resentment. Alfa had already closed its Milan factory in 2000.

The Alfa Romeo Milano – the Italian brand’s second small SUV – is now in the final stages of testing and development at the hallowed Balocco test track.

Primed for a full unveiling on 10 April, the Milano is primed to take Alfa Romeo back into the B-segment for the first time since the Mito supermini was retired in 2019.

Alfa Romeo has also emphasised the focus on the SUV's handling, stating that it's targeting “best-in-class driving dynamics” to “guarantee quick cornering with a high level of grip".

It added that the team of engineers working on the Milano previously developed the 4C and 8C sports cars, the Giulia saloon and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio performance SUV.

Powertrain details will be announced in April, but we’re expecting the Milano EV to use a 54kWh battery, offering a range of around 250 miles.

Alfa Romeo will officially unveil the Milano on 10 April

It’s the brand’s first all-electric car, and will become the smallest member of its lineup

Alfa Romeo has announced it'll reveal the forthcoming Milano on 10 April 2024, as the car enters its final testing phase. It’s not only set to be the brand’s first all-electric vehicle, but also the smallest in a line-up which currently consists of the Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale.

While most details are being kept secret for now, Alfa has stated the Milano will place precedence on driving pleasure, with an aim on providing “direct and precise steering geometry”. So expect it to be able to go around corners without a wheel falling off at the very least.

But perhaps we could even expect a little more than that, given its core team consists of engineers who previously worked on projects like the 4C, 8C, and Giulia GTA. So it’ll be interesting to see how the diminutive Milano will compete with similarly ‘sporty’ urban cars like the Abarth 500e.

Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo, has previously said of the Milano: “It also serves as a ‘welcome’ to anyone looking for a unique sporting experience in this segment and the distinctive beauty of Italian design. Milano is the first milestone in the brand's transition process to electric and, like the Tonale, has the important task of further strengthening Alfa Romeo's global presence.”

Back in December of last year, we found out the name of Alfa Romeo's first EV - it will be called Milano. That's the Italian way to say the name of the city of Milan, and that city is where Alfa Romeo was founded in 1910, so this is all about going back to roots or some such thing.

At that time all we knew about the official unveiling of the Milano was that it would be taking place at some point in April this year. Today, the brand has finally revealed the exact date: April 10. The event starts at 5PM local time (CEST), which is going to be 3PM GMT, and 4PM in the UK.

New compact SUV and stunning sports sedan: here’s what Alfa Romeo has in store

Alfa Romeo gave up on the compact car market when the Mito and Giulietta were put out to pasture, but now the famed Italian carmaker is making a comeback with the Milano.

The new compact SUV model is set to make its world debut on April 10, and you’ll be able to livestream the reveal on Alfa Romeo’s international website.

The Milano will be the firm’s first B-segment vehicle since the Mito bowed out.

Although it takes the form of a crossover, Alfa’s team of Italian engineers, who also worked on sports cars like the 4C and 8C, have sought to ensure it offers best-in-class driving dynamics and an extremely precise steering geometry.

It’s not a completely unique creation, however, sharing its basic E-CMP underpinnings with the Peugeot 2008 and Jeep Avenger.
