Alfa Romeo Tonale update brings refreshed interior

Revisions to the Italian family SUV aim to address key criticisms of its interior

Alfa Romeo has given the Tonale an interior makeover as part of its 2025-model-year update.

This follows criticism of the firm's crucial volume crossover for failing to match the fit and finish of rivals such as the Volvo XC40 and BMW X1.

Autocar's road test noted that “primary cabin mouldings feel quite coarse and wobbly in places” and primary features – including air vents, infotainment screen, instrument cowl and armrest cubby – appeared to be “flimsy and a little poorly secured”.

Since the Tonale went on sale at the start of 2023, just around 2000 models have been sold in the UK. Although this makes it Alfa’s best-seller, it is 46,000 units behind the XC40 over the same period.

In response, the main update to the crossover is a new centre console that is sleeker and better than the pre-facelifted car’s, Alfa says. The Tonale also replaces the more traditional drive selector with a new rotary selector.

Elsewhere, the criticised instrument cluster has been improved and the clock and the fuel and battery gauges are now easier to read, Alfa says.

The facelifted Alfa Romeo Tonale is a genuinely attractive crossover

Alfa widens the track on its Tonale and fits a new grille inspired by the Giulia GTA and GTAm

“For Alfa Romeo, beauty is never an abstract concept; it is the result of the perfect balance between harmonious proportions, sculpted surfaces, muscular lines and technical functionality.”

Now, you’d be forgiven for thinking that was a line about its Giulia GTA or the 33 Stradale supercar, no? It isn’t. In fact, we’ve taken that quote straight from the press release announcing a facelift to the Tonale crossover. Never change, Alfa.

Thankfully, the Tonale does actually look rather good for a little crossover, and it has now been improved with a more aggressive lower air intake and a newly concave 'Scudetto' grille with horizontal bars running across its centre and extra little intakes inspired by the Giulia GTA and GTAm saloons. Nice.

Alfa says the proportions are now better balanced too thanks to a shorter front overhang and widened tracks front and back. There are fresh wheel designs that range from 17 to 20in, while the colour palette has been expanded to include Brera Red, Monza Green and Ocra.

Updated Alfa Romeo Tonale Unveiled

Alfa Romeo has handed the Tonale a refresh for 2026. We detail what you can expect from the updated model lineup…

Despite only having been on the market for three years, Alfa Romeo has decided to give the Tonale an extensive update that ushers in, among other things, some styling revisions, an array of new colours and a reworked model lineup.

The existing Tonale range will be augmented with the addition of Sprint, Ti and Veloce models, as well as a launch-edition Sport Speciale that features several sporty styling enhancements such as gloss black Brembo brake callipers, silver side skirts and bumper accents, and white Alfa Romeo lettering.

In terms of the styling updates, the Tonale now features a redesigned nose that incorporates a new, concave scudetto – or ‘little shield’ (the signature grille) that’s inspired by that of the 33 Stradale supercar, as well as more prominent front air dams. The emblem badging has undergone some changes – now adopting the black-and-white motif introduced with the Junior. The designers have also marginally widened the front and rear tracks and reduced the car’s front overhang to give it a more purposeful stance, and a choice of new 19-inch Stile and 20-inch, lightweight Fori alloy wheel designs are now offered.
