This is why I'll wait for the tech to settle down and buy a cheapish stand alone player.

PUNTERS THINKING OF buying a Blu-ray disk player should wait until November if they do not want to be saddled with a lemon.

The Blu-ray Disc Association sdays players released after October 31 should have a fuller range of features. For example they will be able to play back picture-in-picture video, as driven by BD Java interactive technology.

While lots of Blu-ray players that are on the shelves can handle BD Java to varying degrees, few can cope with the picture-in-picture capability.

Sony's Blu-ray 'killer application', the PS3 can't do it and neither can all the stand alone models from Pioneer and Philips.

Pioneer has upgraded its own BD Java playback with a firmware update. Before that its owners could not see a flashlight graphic within the menu portion of the Blu-ray version of the movie The Descent.

Videobusiness talked to Andy Parsons, a senior VP at Pioneer Electronics who said he doubted firmware updates would bridge all the gaps.

It remains a moot point whether older machines can be upgraded with firmware to get picture-in-picture functionality as the BD Java specification is a bit complicated for this sort of upgrade.

Other upgrades that the new standard demands is that all Blu-ray players must hold a minimum 256MB of persistent memory storage, although those that connect to the Interweb must have 1GB of such memory.

So far the studios have not released a true picture-in-picture Blu-ray product. The Descent had a work around for it.

It looks like the early adopters who gave Blu-ray its start and paid over-the-odds for their machines may find that they have to buy another player to get the full monty. µ

While I can understand the need for picture-in-picture for watching tv, I just don't see the need to have it for movies. When I watch a movie, I want to watch a movie, not watch something else in a different window while the movie is still going...

I'd suggest waiting anyway. Purely from a financial viewpoint. They are bound to get cheaper towards the end of this year/beginning of next year.

the funny thing is... HOW IS ACTUALLY GOING TO USE IT? i mean it's not like a pause feature or some thing that can be on use to most people... hell... i only discovered my tv had the function a month ago... and that was coz i stood on the remote, and now i think it's just a waste of time.

god dammit, i think people are just trying to make a big fuss coz they went with the xbox360 and are just pissed off

i dont think that anyone who got an xbox360 is pissed because it is a great console, but I wouldn't get any type of blu ray player yet, be it a PS3 or stand alone until there is a reason to get one and that is the selected format to replace DVD. at the moment its probably just a waste of money

I was thinking the same thing about the 360 people being pissed off. ;) Seems like they consentrate more on finding bad things to say about the PS3, than enjoy playing games on the 360. ;) I bet if I go look at the posts of some of these 360 fanboys, they will have more posts in the PS3 threads, than in the 360 threads.

Joking aside, if you want the latest technology for watching movies, then BlueRay is the way to go (in my opinion). And I don't see any reason to wait. The movies are already in the shops and Mr. Video will have BlueRay titles end July. But then again, if you're happy with DVD, stick with that.

Actually it's because I follow all gaming news, (even cell phones ) and the stuff pops up. From there it's just a competition with GM to see who gets to post it here first :p

Having been around this block a number of times I also know to never buy first gen technology, there's almost always issues - there were with DVD, with the 360, With bluetooth, you name it, it's better to wait till it settles. My opinion is exactly the same about standalone players.

Going from the horse to the mouth, when do you think SA will have an internal Blu-Ray player for a normal PC?
