PlayStation announces the end of physical discs

Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation console releases from January 2028 as it shifts further toward digital distribution.

From that date, new PlayStation games will be sold through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only, the company said.

Okay, how is this any different from Steam?
While I like to have the physical media/ disc. It makes little to no difference. My last PS was digital only, no disc reader

And people got upset with me when I said this was always going to happen in the GTA6 thread. Sony and manufacturers have been working on this for years to phase out discs. Writing has been on the wall ever since PS5 and Xbox came without drives.

The irony is dripping now.

Xbox was decades ahead of its time, but nobody was ready.

It has gotten a lot better for me over the past 2 years or so. On 300 mb/s Axxess Openserve fibre line and I will get almost the full 300 mb/s on downloads.
