All-in-one ADSL pricing comparison

I've been thinking about upgrading my 384kbps to 4Mbps for a while now and I think after reading these prices I may as well do it with Telkom.

At the moment I am on their Closer 4 product which gives me 1GB plus 1000 minutes (which I never use). I invariably have to buy an additional 2GB's of shaped data @R69 each from Axxess to get me through the month, so my actual monthly internet costs are in the region of R694 on the slower line, whereas on the faster line I will only pay about R678. Duh! No brainer.

I was a little concerned that if I do need to make local calls to landlines that I would be hammered, but the costs for local calls are only 0.58c min and 0.89c for national. Last month my total time spent on the landline was 148 minutes to various local and out of town numbers. Assuming they were all out of town calls made out of Callmore time (which they weren't), the maximum pain would have been R131.72.

And now I'm thinking that if I tell Multichoice to go and screw themselves, I'll have an extra R560 a month to spend on data. Somebody show me where to d/l torrents!
 
I personally think all these deals are a bloody ripp-off. Read through the comments and you see how quickly we become complacent with these rediculous prices. Even saying things like "good deal" every now and then, when in fact, none of these are good deals no matter how you look at it.

£13.50(R182) per month for up to 8Mb (160x speed) unlimited broadband
£17.50(R236)per month for up to 24Mb (480x speed) unlimited broadband
£21.50(R290) per month for up to 24Mb (480x speed) unlimited pro broadband

And this is 4 hours away from London in a small town:mad:

Seriously man... get over it, we don't live in the ****ing UK. No point in quoting that as its not going to be anywhere near that for a while. Thats not even the topic so just move on with your life.

The cost of broadband is what it is... i'm going to look for the best deal I can get in SA and be happy when things change.


Back on topic:
I'm with cybersmart, I play DOTA locally and play an Online RPG internationally, my lag is never a problem and I don't notice the difference between when I had Telkom ADSL and Meweb. I also download torrents I did 8 gigs last month and 11 the previous month. I have a 3 gig account on a 384 line with nightrider and grow4life. I pay R475 in total per month (including line rental with Closer2)

Oh and just contacted Cybersmart today and that unlimited uploads product is now available, so for an extra R59 I should be able to start pulling at least 15 gig a month for A little over R500pm !

I don't think that there can be any single package that will be the best for every Broadband user... everyone's needs are different. OK well most people on this site need uncapped 24meg lines but my Mom copes just fine with a 384 1gig account.

I do, one for my wife and one for me. Maybe more than one for me because every up/download process is an additional connection (as far as I can work out).
 
Yup Tellkom ace is that they dont neccesary cap you at 3GB , you get up to 8GB but average 4,5GB. Thats a 50% more in bandwidth !! All this gonna change soon though , cannot wait to give them the finger.
 
Article does not mention how long the contract's are binding (some are 12 months while others are 24 months), and it does not mention which come with a complimentary (albeit locked) router and which don't.

Two very crucial factors if you're thinking of signing anything! (and especially before Seacom goes live)

Yep. I use it up in about 7 days.

Just got back from Telkom retail shop after ordering the upgrade. Geez, that company can confuse the cråp out of you with all their options. To do the upgrade now would have meant that I would have to pay for 6Gigs instead of 3, but if I upgrade the line speed now and drop the Closer plan then I can carry on using my existing data plan. And I pay less than if I had stuck to their plan for the rest of this month.

So, the order for the speed upgrade is in place and apparently within 3 days I should have a 4Mbps line. At the end of the month I have to call them to get a new user ID with 3GB data.

Why on earth do you want to sign a 12/24 month contract?
First rule of ADSL. Never ever sign time based contracts.
Things are changing rapidly now and to be stuck with 20 months left on a contract while everybody else is paying less each passing month is crazy.
 
I will never bind myself to any contract with ANY service provider for ANY product EVER again.

So, all you little marketing snoops reading this who work for these companies, you can report back to your bosses that the word is spoken!

And if you are on a contract or know of anybody who is, don't ever sign one again. You are making things bad for everyone.
 
I had cellphone contracts with Nashua Mobile for over 12 years. If I think about how much money I paid to them over that period of time for cellphone service I hardly ever used... I'd probably be able to buy enough bandwidth to last me for the next 25 years!

That's not quite how it works.

You can only have a single ADSL connection active at once. So if you were both connected via RASPPOE you would need two connections, no matter what you do. If a router handles your connection, it's one connection, even if you both use it.

Multiple connections would allow you to connect more than one person from one or more locations to the same account, which sounds nice enough, but isn't a whole lot of use to many people.

My browser alone can make around 30 connections all by itself. Torrents can have as many as 200 (or more) active connections. All of that goes over a single ADSL connection.
