All UCT campuses closed

these are not protestors.

They are Terrorist or at least rioters.

Stop being PC and call them protestors.

This really makes me fume. I doubt that the protesters really have any idea how harmful their actions are. They think they are just shutting down the university for a few days, when in reality they are damaging the the quality of staff for decades to come. Many staff members will be considering taking foreign posts, early retirement, etc., and one of the most amazing attributes of the university - the ability to attract and retain foreign experts from around the world, is likely to cease to exist.
It has already ceased to exist.

I can guarantee you that any foreign expert working at these universities is already planning their move back home or to a different university.

And any foreign experts that were thinking of coming here have changed their minds.

I know one professor from the US, who moved to SA and taught at a university there for nearly 20 years. He resigned a little while ago due to all this mess.

Now imagine the impact this will have on a project such as SKA. Universities have already begun hiring leading researchers and academics from around the world to begin their planning and contribute to SKA once its in full swing. Those very people are now in the thick of things with #FMF. Add to that, those academics will undoubtedly be expected to train and/or supervise local students, who may very well be - or in the least, be tainted by association to - #FMF riff-raff.

I don't think it would affect research much. I highly doubt people doing SKA research are involved with the protests. They are most likely locked up in their labs, looking at their computers.
If anything most professors and lecturers, would relish at the thought of not having to deal with classes, tests and tutorials. We might even see a jump in the amount of academic work produced.

Another :p
...

I know which institution you're talking about and the communication from the executive management to staff has been pathetic. They're now leaving all decisions in the hands of department heads, some of which lack common sense.
