Johannesburg - An alleged hijacker was shot dead by private security guards in Alberton on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said the guards spotted the man getting out of a car and allegedly hijacking a delivery vehicle after the driver had dropped off a package.

The alleged hijacker then sped off with the vehicle and the driver, while the other vehicle followed.

The guards followed the vehicles and in the ensuing chase, the man crashed the delivery vehicle into a wall at a nearby school. The vehicle with his alleged accomplices drove away.

Makhubela said the man got out of the delivery vehicle, tried to grab some of the packages and was climbing a fence into a nearby yard when he was shot dead.

basing on the little info provided, the security guards will probably be arrested and charged with Murder as they shot a fleeing criminal......but i hope not.

The crim was climbing over the fence into a school. Security guard will say he was a threat to any kids that might have been in the school (is it still school holidays?).

As per the gun act :" Right to life" and the fact that your not allowed to kill someone over property means that the security guards will be going to jail....according to that article, the details aren't given. Very possible that the guy was shooting at the guards or had a gun in his hands etc. On the assumption that he hijacked the vehicle, I am assuming that he had a firearm with him. Reporting is so incredibly slap dash these days, what we read there is most likely only 10% of what happened.

Where on earth did you get the story that you can't protect your property?

F*** I hate that word...

But I say good- one less criminal to worry about.
 
Well I don't have the Gun Act in-front of me, but when I did the licensing it is stressed that there are three main reasons that stand in the way of using lethal force.

1: Right of Life. Everyone is allowed the right to life. Killing someone is never justified if there was ANY other solution.
2: Life takes precedence over Property. You are not allowed to take a life in the defense of property.
3: Your, or the life of another must physically be in danger. The Threatening act must be in process, before you are allowed to take lethal action.

The above is typed from memory, so don't get all defensive if i made a mistake there somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, Criminals deserve no less than what happened here. Our Country is too soft and it breeds criminal activity through the slackness of our policing and our laws.

I am just stating what i read when doing the license.
