Edit: Half of the Garmin lure is their ecosystem and software, the devices would be a lot less useful without that.

This. Their software is fantastic - nothing comes close... Although I can't do much now with Garmin Connect when the servers are down.

The big question is whether or not the company paid the blackmailer what is likely to be a multi-million dollar demand.

It seems the company has somehow got the decryption key it needs to start bringing services back online.
