Nope, its a hardcoded limitation within XP Pro itself. Microsoft intended it this way

Get a Linux box with Samba or buy a server licence is your only recourse :(

Oh and the 10 connect thing - its connections to the pc within a 1 min window

IIRC this limitation only got introduced with sp2. SP1 doesn't have this limitation.

I wrote a little app that kicks the connections as soon as they're idle. (The connection is held once openened) This sorted the issue. Let me know if interested.

Correct. Was implemented to prevent the spread of worms. Though downgrading a PC to SP1 seems a bit silly to me there is an alternative I used once

A downloadable patch that restores the Windows File limiting connections to a certain number to pre-sp2 version or a manual hack

IMO i'd just use samba and get it over with ^.^

think before you post. you guys are talking about the number of tcp/ip connections per SECOND. a different matter from the number of clients allowed to connect to a smb share. the only similarity is that they both refer to "10" which is a very weak and flawed connection to make.

<edit> oh, and you also supasta.

Thanks Dr.
Egads I stand corrected

Rather than being smart i'd rather try giving something to help - however tentative it may be. Seen this info posted on other forums so why not spread the love. But thanks really i'll review whether these things work personally before posting :)

Sadly I havent been able to test these types of fixes as I actually do run Samba servers to avoid this exact same problem.

Note For Windows XP Professional, the maximum number of other computers that are permitted to simultaneously connect over the network is ten. This limit includes all transports and resource sharing protocols combined. For Windows XP Home Edition, the maximum number of other computers that are permitted to simultaneously connect over the network is five. This limit is the number of simultaneous sessions from other computers the system is permitted to host. This limit does not apply to the use of administrative tools that attach from a remote computer.

I will however still stand with my previous statement of Samba/Server time unless you have 2coppers to add?

/end

Is it limited even if you disable simple sharing and set the amount of connections there?

EDIT- Nevermind, just checked now and if you put a number greater than 10 it just puts it back to 10.

I was just about to recommend that ;)

+1

SME Server can do domains (Samba) and can be a possible solution.

It is easy to set up and configure, and is free, and it does not need a whizz-bang PC in order to operate.
