Almost upgrade time again.

Here is my quote, (and no smallprint saying i will not get the gear due to any reason).

SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 16GB LTE GOLD+

GEAR 2 BLACK + 1GB DATA X 24 @ R549

PM (R350 + R199 Subs) on Smart S

Was that quote received after submitting a pre-order request or through a store? Did it/they give you the option to choose a Gear 2, Gear Fit or S-Cover?

Gear 2 is for new customers (first 100 approved)
Gear fit is for additional line
s-cover for upgrades and the rest
AFAIK

Thanks. I see here (http://phonepricescompared.co.za/2014/04/samsung-galaxy-s5-price-in-south-africa/) that the Vodacom deal has 75 minutes airtime versus 100 minutes with MTN but it has 450MB data versus 300MB data. SMS is of little concern as even 100 are far too many. The extra 150MB data with MTN would be worth R20 (R40 for 300MB) whereas an extra 25 minutes airtime would be worth R35 (R70 for 50 minutes). So the pricing is actually much the same with both companies.

The choice would boil down to the "freebies", with the Gear being far more useful than the speakers. I seriously wonder about the number of Gears given though... it says stock limited and I fear it will not be many and that'd be the only reason I'd go with them. Without the Gear the MTN contract suits me better. I reckon most people will get the free S-covers with only a tiny few getting Gears. The problem is you won't know before committing :(

EDIT: As an aside, I see an extra GB of data with MTN would cost R90 so neither here nor there regarding the boost either.

You forgot to mention that MTN doesn't change the firmware to get their logo on the boot up screen like Vodacom does.

I phoned 082 178 444 and told them that I want the galaxy 5 gold with the gear 2 as my next upgrade.
I asked what it will cost and was given the two options.

They did it all over the phone, sent me a verification code via sms then gave me a reference number, approximate delivery date and emailed me the quote.

Mine was an upgrade.
I specified what I want and they set it up that way for me.

I had to fish the fine print about the gear from the depths of the deep blue (now red) sea (i.e. consultant who called).

Well if someone made a mistake it's their problem, not mine :)

I went for that within about 15 minutes of the page going up and was told they are not ready yet.
They took my number.
About 25 minutes later I called again on impulse and then went through the upgrade process as described above.

About an hour later they called me again as I had left my number the first time.

Anyway, I'll check box contents and all that when it arrives.
If I don't get what is on my quote I'll simply not accept the box or sign for it.

It will suck though as I already bought a cover off ebay (the silver one).

Exactly as per the quote above :D

The fact Vodacom actually communicates with you is a big feather in their caps. I have tried to phone MTN, tweeted them, asked on here and have had no joy confirming my pre-order!

I was with MTN for many years.
I ****ed up and could not pay them for about a year.
Took about 4 years to get their lawyers off my case (even though I paid them in full) and then they kept trying to make me pay more cash for another 2 years.
After that I decided I am never getting an MTN contract again.
