Has anyone ever purchased speakers made by either of the above mentioned companies and if so, how did you find them?

Altec Lansing have some excellent PC speakers, there are several forumites who swear by a certain model (it's over R1000). Divoom is still newish on the market, a little cheap, but still provide good bang for buck. Personally, I recommend Logitech.

I would ignore crysis' opinion - he's quite the PC speaker thread troll! :D Perhaps speak to him if you had R3000 to blow on studio/monitor speakers. :D

Logitech have some nice speakers
Z5500 if you going for 5.1 channel and the Z2300 if you going 2.1 channel.

I got some Divoom speakers, for the price they're great. I actually got them because of the multi-function abilities they provide. Typically if you buy Creative/Logitech it's meant for your PC, but the moment you want to hook up something else or multiple devices [MP3 players / Xbox] the solution does not work or you need to buy some premium-expensive version.

The Divoom speakers+amp [inlcuding the one i have] seem all aimed to allow you to plug anything into it, including my TV + Mp3 player + PC/Xbox360 -at the same time- even. I have both a creative and the divoom solutions, and only use my divoom now....it's just more practical i guess.

And it's small things , like being able to plug in HEADPHONES into the Amp instead of your PC [without paying yet even more for this obvious feature *glares at creative*].

Obviously if you're going "big" with your home entertainment, then you'd probably not even look at any of this, then we're talking Sony and gigantic amps&speakers with multiple inputs from DVD,TV,HD/Composite/S-Video etc etc etc.

You can just get a 3.5mm to rca converter thing a ma bob. My logitech speakers came with one of those so i can use the speakers in a pc, dvd player, xbox, ps3 etc

altec lansing make good products however they are a bit pricey

if you want really good value for money go for logitech products.

I have used both and have been very happy with them. They both are well made and give excellent deep sound quality. And they are very reasonably priced.

Hmm Postman, those links you gave recommend the Z-4's but my friend had that set and swore they were pretty damn bad. It's what made him buy his Altec Lansing MX5021's. They are around R1500 though, but I don't know if you find them in SA anymore.

I suppose it's a different price range, but the Z4's weren't that good from what I heard (as in listened too :p).

I also have the same Altec Lansing set, sounds good.

Why did he think they were bad?

I have just given up on all chinese brands. I bought some decent home theater speakers a while back, and now they are useless. Amp is fked as it clips at low volumes. Cheap components cause this. its not from abuse either. On the other hand my phase linear, quad and luxman amps have been running 100% fine since the 70's. All they need is a transistor change and a cap change every 10 years.
