Altech Node Content

so does anybody have actual figures, as to how many of these Nodes have been sold since launch at the R3500 price point?

What I found interesting was they're advertising on DSTV.

Would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall when they approached Multichoice with the request :)

I have DSTV Premium, Netflix and Hulu+, but I'll admit If I had the money, I'd have bought it. Not for the content. but for automation stuff...and because I'm a gadget freak.

That being said, R3500 is an enormous amount of money for what this device is; a set-top box. They'll need to half that price (at least) to generate interest. What they should have done is sell this thing at a loss (like DSTV is doing with their new decoder) to get consumers to "bite".

Once the consumer got used to the Node underneath his TV, hopefully it'll be too inconvenient to cancel - although, knowing Altech they'll probably give people a Cancellation Telephone Number which doesn't exist :D

But in all seriousness, they need to re look at their business model. They have (had?) the opportunity to redeem themselves and, as is the norm with them, they're messing it up.

Saw the content, and its kinda of meh. I'd like a South African version of Netflix/Hulu where I can watch shows on any and every platform. The barriers to entry for something like Node (and to a lesser extent Vidi) is quite high, more so because of the hardware. I honestly couldn't be bothered with the content because its the same stuff I can download off the net and watch at my convenience.

Thats the thing brixton, the content on there has either already been seen, or the things that you need to pay for, has also already been seen either the cinemas or downloaded.

Personally, the way i look at it, is that the main aim of this box is for the automation functions like controlling a geyser. For goodness sake, controlling a geyser???? Get up, and switch off geyser :D

I don't know too many people into home automation...so they're really aiming for the high-end. I'm yet to see the hardware in any store...I went into the Dion Wired at Canal Walk a few weeks ago and the salesman looked at me as if I was smoking my socks when I enquired about the Node.

i would be interested to know 2 things, whats under the hood of that box, and why the content cannot be refreshed after say 2 weeks, rather than 1 month. The series can be refreshed on a monthly basis, but surely the movies should be quicker. You can only watch a movie so many times, before you have had enough. Unless its the Back to the Future stuff :D

So ive bumped this up, as im keen to know if any of the MyBB users gambled their life on a Node? Lol

I've asked asked around and it seems quite a few bought it for the smart home part (camera, hotspot etc) and they're selling because no one sells the accessories

It's a lot cheaper now for the decoder and it's a nice way to get content without needing broadband internet.

I remember you wanting me to get one to test

No I have broadband.

I just think it's a great way to get VOD without internet.

Almost like having all the positives of broadband VOD, with the benefits of satellite.

Home automation accessories non-existent it seems.
