Altech Node sells 15,000

At its core it is a device with Broadcom SOC hardware running Android 4.1.2, with an Altech-customised launcher and the applicable playback container for the DRM protected content downloaded via satellite. So if you do not want to pay the R299 subs, you essentially have a R3500 Android MiniPC.

The Node is going to tank eventually. Our market isn't big enough for such a device.

The market is always big enough for this kind of innovation. VOD without using rubbish i-net connection? That's a win right there. If it tanks, there will be others in it's place IMO. It's the way forward.

Not with such a high initial cost to the consumer, and especially not with such a high sub, it's a niche product

Yea, it seems some here misread. It's a little playing with words there...15000 INTO THE RETAIL CHANNEL...not sold to customers.

Came here to say this. It's a BS stat. They need subscriptions for this to become economically viable, but chose not to share how many activations they had (ie. sold to consumer), even though we know they will know these numbers precisely.

The 15000 figure is just marketing PR fluff.

I would go for this but the decoder itself is way too expensive. I think about R3500 last time i checked.

So not even slightly tempting. It just looks like poor mans version of everything. Their video service is bad. Their home automation would have been decent 3 years ago. Now it is just bad. And Android....why

conceptually this seems a great idea. the associated costs not so much.

And , dare i add, this list of content will become boring very quickly...

and i still want to know why you need to pay extra R15 rental for 2002 movies(12 years ago..) Ice age for example :/

sigh

netflix, hulu+ and unotelly all under R300, and you dont have to pay extra for content!!!

why the hell do you want to pay R 15,00 for Thin Blue Line Movie 1988 Drama 16 S, L, V, D

nice concept but they trying to catch on stupid people here, and the sad part is they will catch them

You do need to pay extra. Netflix for example, doesn't offer most movies for streaming. So you end up renting the movies from iTunes. The reality is some content is available for a set fee, and then other content you need to rent

1. Not everyone has internet in ZA. Not even 900 000 adsl lines are active. This is a satellite service for the 50m people in ZA.

2. You're looking at the old movies. R25 for a movie just of the cinema is great and something Netflix doesn't offer. VUDU would be the comparable service.

No its not.

I'll always support pushvod as i think it's the only viable mass adopted VOD solution for SA. There's a lot wrong with this product, it's features just don't fit its market position. And their ads...oh lord.

You know what? There's a VOD solution already mass adopted and widely used in SA. USB STICKS. The sharing and often selling of content thru usb sticks/external hdd's is widespread in SA.By the time "Four Corners" started on the big screen, i could not think of one coloured that hasn't seen it yet. A friend made the same comment about Schuster's last movie.
Now there's a vod provider (Discover digital) that'll use exactly that with vod kiosks across the country next year. This is the type of out of the box thinking that's needed. Instead of forcing useless feautures on consumers, these guys decided to monetize current consumer behaviour.

Also, Siyaya will have 3 or 5 channels with their soccer content. Bundled with this, they'll have a PUSHVOD offering for roughly R80 a month. That's the type of price a pushvod product goes for as its generally cheaper than pull vod (vidi, netflix). Siyaya's vod product will be run by a 3rd party on a revshare basis and they gonna launch on satellite and dvb-t2. Their vod product is not gonna need a 3g connection as it'll use hbbtv tech.

This is the type of products that'll survive in the market not a node that doesn't know what it wants to be.

node that doesn't know what it wants to be.

This I agree with. The ads don't really position this very well. Historically products that try to be jack of all trades don't do well as people rather have dedicated devices for each solution.

I'd rather have punted the VOD aspect as the main positioning aspect for this product and everything else in the fine print. But that's just me.

Try Popcorn TV - everything is free!

So who has smarthome devices compatible with node? None I assume as I cant find them for actual sale.
