The Node is going to tank eventually. Our market isn't big enough for such a device.

I wouldn't say that. We don't have the broadband infrastructure for everyone to stream just yet, but something satellite based like this would work 100s.

It's just that cost barrier to entry...

Can you remotely watch your security cameras and control your home appliances over the internet with this Node?

Looks quite promising - the only bummer is that if you stop paying your R299 a month it cuts everything off, not just the premium content.

Ja im not paying per month for a device like this wtf

Huh?

You can still movies if you don't pay the sub.

Remember there are no ads with this device. So no way for them to make money if you don't pay.

You know the monthly costs are for the movies and TV series right?

Sure??

What do you get for your R299 subscription per month?

Your subscription firstly allows you unlimited access to Altech Node’s library of over 700 hours of movies, TV shows, children’s series and movies, sport documentaries, etc. This includes weekly news updates with a week in review and the week ahead and weekly sports highlight packages. All this content is preloaded on your Altech Node. Onceconnected to a satellite, the content will be refreshed on an ongoing basis.
Node secondly offers you access to premium content, enabling you to watch the latest movies, fresh off the cinema circuit, at a small rental per title for 48 hours viewing time.
It thirdly turns your home into a smart home, offering you numerous benefits relating to home surveillance, safety and control.
With Smart plugs you can open and close gates and garage doors using Node, turn lights on and off, set the sprinklers in your garden and so much more.
You can manage and control your home surveillance through Node compatible motion sensors, Wi-Fi-enabled cameras, access control, etc., all from your Node and on your TV screen.
Node, when connected to the internet, creates a Wi-Fi hotspot in your home, so you can connect to the Internet to up to 5 of your smart devices.
You can buy pre-paid airtime and data as well as electricity from your Node.
Finally, your Altech Node allows you to watch and listen to your own content (movies, pictures, music) using a USB plugged into Node. Node also allows you to stream the content to up to 5 other smart devices in your home at no additional cost and with no additional bandwidth required - simply by activating the DLNA feature in the Node.

The monthly Node subscription of R299 includes:

Video on Demand with 700 hours of premium entertainment and sports content
Smart TV with full internet access
Home Monitoring of security and electrical devices

basically if I one day didnt want the node sub anymore but I wanted to keep it as a "smart home" control hub connected via my internet connection using their smart plugs to turn stuff on and off etc. then it would not work.. unless I'm misunderstanding how this thing works and it somehow needs the satellite to do these tasks.

Are all shows and movies only for rent?
No, a clear distinction is made between Transactional Video on Demand (Rental) and Subscription Video on Demand (Subscription).
• Rental allows you to see the very latest 50 or more blockbuster and straight from the cinema movies, i.e. before it becomes available on TV. This will cost you a rental of R25 or less per movie and is viewable for 48 hours per purchase.
• The Subscription Video Library allows you to view more than 300 movies and series as part of your subscription. These include movies, TV shows, children’s series and movies, sport, news, documentaries, etc.

Hmmm...

I think the fact that you need a monthly sub and the initial costs are high are going to break it, the geek in me wants one, but the practical side in me says its a waste of time and money

Probably just the way it's worded for marketing. I find it hard to believe they would actively disable things.

Yeah, I emailed them to ask

Got a response..
If your subscription is not active you are able to use any service on the Node that requires data bundles like streaming through youtube; emails ;social networks etc.

However you wont be able to watch premium content(rentals) and subscriptional content. You can use the DNLA on the Node to stream content from your external drive\USB.

Your appliances can be controlled using the smart plug and have surveillance with the cameras via the Node as long the cameras are on the same network wifi with the Node.

You can either use wi-fi: Lan/ADSL or 3G sim card for internet connection.

Incorrect wording on their site then..

Had the article title read... Altech signs up 15,000 Node users... that would be impressive. But, 15000 to retailers, no big deal, they could very well spend months/years on a shop shelf going nowhere!

Just in case anyone else was interested, you can't control your home appliances remotely - only via the Node device itself.

No Mr *****, you can only have control of your appliances trough the tv via your Node.

Pity.

Yea, it seems some here misread. It's a little playing with words there...15000 INTO THE RETAIL CHANNEL...not sold to customers.

Also i doubt, email or not, that R300 p/m is only for the vod. If that were thrue, it would've been less than R149 p/m. I think its more like letting the stupid customer pay back my startup costs with an inflated monthly sub.
