I've been looking at the following;

Wireless N300 3G/4G Multi-WAN Router

Billion Enterprise Series Fibre / 4G / LTE Wireless-N VPN broadband Router

What do you guys think about these as options so I can do a month-to-month contract?

I'm going to mainly be gaming and streaming Netflix, etc.

Will it work well?

If u going to buy the tp link modem make sure its the v2 version the v1 does not support 4g. I have the 3420 modem v2 with a 3g modem works flawlessly for about 2 years now.

Yep get the MR3420 version 2 hardware that's the one i got from Takealot so you should be safe buying from them. It supports both 3g and 4G modems. But if you want a better 4G router you can go for the Huawei B593s 601 for a bit more Rs though (~R1000 if lucky). It has decreased in price lately if you check the Edgars/CNA stores, solid router that if you have LTE coverage, you put the sim directly inside it no USB modem required

People have saying it's better than the 5186 especially with regards to firmware. I think I'll give that a go. Is it LTE-A ready?

I am not sure E5186 is inferior to B593 regarding to firmware features. It might have some firmware related issues, it is expected from a new product. Disappointment might come from the fact that some members expected twice a speed of B593, it doesn't work that way, so they colled down. Yes, it is LTE-A capable, but very expensive, so B593 for R1000 is definitely better option. It is cheaper than router plus decent LTE modem separately.

Be aware that B593-601 (from Edgars/CNA) do not support Cell C LTE frequency. If you are looking for a router which support for all SA LTE networks, there is a new model B515s-936 around R1900 from Cell C.
