Hi,

If Telkom is unable to provide a fixed line option. What other options are available if I want uncapped internet without paying an arm and a leg? Telkom offered me the W-CDMA option, which is basically a cellular connection, but with this I cannot use a different ISP!

Any suggestions?

Regards

Cell C, 8ta, Neotel, VC, MTN, Iburst, maybe some WISPs in your area?

Cell C and 8ta for price and speed, great low cost backup. If you need guarantees on latency etc, try the WISPs, IS do some services in that line, not sure if Neotel have an SLA on that side of things. I have heard Telkom's Wimax solution is pretty stable, so don't write it off, just check what your options are. Where roughly are you based, maybe I can suggest a local provider?

Hi

Thanks so much for the info - I'll do some research!
I am situated in SE2, Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng. The W-CDMA option from Telkom is basically a 8-ta cellular connection...
Also, I looked at WiMax with the same problem - no other ISP allowed, thus no uncapped option available!

iBurst gives "happy hours" with the 64k VAS option, so you can download all you want between midnight and 08:00, guys get a decent 60 or so gigs a month during happy hours.

Are you sure? http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/183739-Latency-of-Telkom-WiMax

I don't really see how they could do that as it is an alternative to ADSL which is purely a last mile tech. I don't even think they would know how to enforce this. By default all their links allow at least two PPP connections (to allow for Telkom VPN I assume) so you can just add it on the router and send all your traffic via the second PPP.

WiMax as alternative

Had a look at it again. It is possible - don't know why the consultant at Telkom told me it is not possible. They must get their gears in place... Anyway, I see the speed is a bit slow and the R204pm is for existing clients - not sure what that means! I was actually looking for more or less 4Mbps... Looks like I am running out of options here!

Thanks for all the replies!!

as said in an other thread, i dont think they take orders for new wimax subscriptions anymore, just continue existing ones

Summary

Well, it seems that there are no feasible (reliable, fast and uncapped) options available in my area. To summarize this is what I discovered:

1. No Telkom line available
2. Broadlink to expensive for residential use (approx. R3000-8000 depending on cap)
3. Amobia - no coverage
4. iBurst - no coverage
5. Neotel - no coverage
6. WiMax - no new connections.

The only available option is a cellular connection. This is however, very unreliable, costly and limited (no "real" uncapped option available).

Ironically the area where I live is heavily populated for years now - I honestly can not believe that there aren't any options except cellular available...

Please, if I missed an feasible option let me know!

Thanks for all the assistance so far!!!

How far out of the iBurst coverage area are you? I setup an omni antenna on a mast in a zero coverage area and managed to get full signal.
