Latency of Telkom WiMax

I would like to find out what the local latency usually is with Telkom WiMax. Anyone know?

Also, I am not too sure how Telkom WiMax works, can I get any ADSL SP for WiMax, for example, can I get a 5GB unshaped ADSL account and use it with my WiMax?
 
I would also like to know how the latency is, well, guess I don't really have a choise since Telkom "have no plans on adding ADSL support on the lines" at the new place I'm moving to at month-end :(

But for interrest sake, what is the pings like on local games on SAIX/ IS server? I play TF2 and L4D.

Can one use uncapped ADSL accounts from axxess,openweb,webafrica,etc on it?
 
Not sure what the latency is, but I can confirm that any ISP account that works with fixed-line ADSL, will also work with Telkom Wimax, because it connects directly to Telkom's ADSL network.
 
I have Telkom WiMax and my latency never goes over 60ms to local addresses. Yes you can use any ADSL ISP on your WiMax. Just keep in mind that a broadband router with builtin ADSL modem will not work. You need a broadband router without builtin ADSL modem.
 
@ AllBrain Could you please let me know what you pay for your Telkom WiMax connection and what you pay for your broadband so I can compare it to Screamer and iBurst.
Also are you restricted to a 512kb connection and have you tried to get anything faster?
 
Monthly rental is R240 and I am using a 1GB prepaid unshaped service from Axxess at R119. Currently 512Kb/s is the fastest Telkom offers. I did ask them if higher speeds are available a month ago but there is no upgrade available yet.
 
How does wimax latency compare to evdo? I get about 60-80ms locally on my neoflex doing a PING in terminal and 120ms using speedtest.net
 
If I understand evdo/cdma correct it makes use of an omni-directional antenna where WiMax makes use a fixed directional antenna. You might get similar pings on both but WiMax will give you less spikes. Also bad weather does not affect it at all.

What about screamer who uses both Wifi and Wimax? Does the wifi one differ much from the wimax one?

WiMax and WiFi use different spectrums. WiFi can do much higher speeds than WiMax but is very line of sight sensitive. I think however Screamer limits their WiMax and WiFi solutions to about the same speeds. Both of them being faster than Telkom's WiMax which sits at 512Kb/s.

Local latency ranges from 40-70ms depending which servers and where you route to. Most I've seen is 90ms.

And yes, you can use any ADSL account you can currently buy at an ISP with Telkom Wimax as the Wimax physically terminates in an ADSL port at their exchange into their network. The Wimax is like a little invisible copper wire (which you don't have to pay for in addition to the connection!) that goes direct to Telkom.
