What open source software can I use to compare SQL Server databases would you recommend?

Why an alternative? You're not happy with Redgate SQL compare?

Thanks guys. I will try VS option. My colleagues though said they were not happy with it.
I will try the DBComparer one as well.

Is this a once off exercise or something that you will be running on a regular basis. At a previous company we used Red Gate SQL Compare previously to aid with the automatic deployment of DB changes. We were very happy with it.

It is not a once off thing and unfortunately we haven't bought Red Gate SQL Compare hence open source alternative.

You can also use open source ETLs (extract, transform, load) and there sre quite a few, I'll name only the ones I've used and liked i.e. both are capable products.
  1. Pentaho Kettle
  2. Talend.
Both are simple to install and work on code generation, meaning the ETL processes are turned into code, which you compile and then these compiled modules can run anywhere.

<offtopic/>I've used Red Gate over a number of years. At the latest place I am working there wasn't a license, so I tried APEX Sql for a while. Good, but not free, and not better than RedGate. The only thing Apex as got right is their free SQL Complete tool which I use in SSMS extensively (RedGate charges $399 for theirs)
