Hi,

I've got a Seagate HDD which I think is faulty. It keeps failing the long tests in Seatools and then Seatools runs a repair and those errors don't pop up again, but new ones do.

This is annoying as it does repair further each time, but I'm pretty sure the drive is toast.

I'd like another app to run through with, any ideas? I usually just pick the drive manufacturers one and Hiren's and be done with it, but in this case the default one isn't working so well.

Thanks,
J

You can keep running the test until either there are no more faulty sectors, or there are no more spare sectors for SeaTools to swap with.

Alternatively, if it's still in warranty return it to the supplier and tell them it keeps failing the test and if it's not in warranty throw it in the bin.

Check the manf date, I've recently had a bunch of 2006/7/8, 80/160GB drives just die on clients.

Leads me to wonder what life to expect from drives with the new 2 year warranty.

Yep I figured that.

It's still under warranty so I'm going to get it swapped out.

Thanks,

+1. All these programs do excellent job. Idea is to scan entire surface for delays. Every time hard drive has reading problems and/or is attempting to relocate sectors there are delays. It is the only method to determine condition of the modern hard drives. SMART can be helpful, but is not reliable tool and most likely fails to show results when firmware is corrupt.

It can be worn heads struggling with the job, or corrupted firmware. In the later case some Seagate drives can be repaired from the diagnostic interface and then re-certified, similiar process as at the factory.

When using MHDD, SATA controller must be set in compatibility mode.
