Being in the IT industry I love my technology and thus always endeavor to understand it inside out. Same goes for my WiMax but since it is not my property I do not want to mess around with the equipment. However I would love to see my signal strength when ever it's raining outside to see what effect it has on the signal as I am still amazed at how nothing short of a forest of trees affects the signal. Now I have gained access to the web interface of the IDU but it seems like there is something wrong. I can see the menu on the side but none of the actual pages wants to show. I keep getting HTML errors telling me that the page I am looking for is not there when ever I click on a menu item. For now I will use a telnet session to check the signal strength but a nice web based graph looks so much better. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly, the IDU is just a power injector, you're actually connecting to the ODU on your roof which has all the smart bits in it.
What software version are you running? I can get you the SNMP OID for SNR, if that helps...

EDIT: Here it is..
.1.3.6.1.4.1.12394.1.1.11.1.0
its the Average Receive SNR

Does it look like this?

A friend of mine is getting this... And his PPPoE connections isn't working as well. We have removed power to the IDU, kept it off for a while and then connected the power again and it is still not working. Didn't try the telnet thing as I didn't know about it. :o

What the default IP on the ODU ?

192.168.254.251

username and password is installer

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the info daffy. In the meantime I have put a wireless router between myself and the IDU so now I cannot reach it anymore. Well I guess my signal must we good enough as I have never had any disconnects or timeouts. Must say WiMax has been the most stable home user solution I have ever used. Now if only Telkom would give us a 1Mb option.

I don't get a reply from that IP if I ping it. Should I be getting a reply? Do all the Telkom WiMax units use the same IP?

In a proper network, the customers don't have access to the management IP.
So there's a good chance they started sorting that out...

Is your ip configured correctly? Yours should be 192.168.254.x subnet mask 255.255.255.0...

That may be the case I'm not able to see the device, mine was replaced a while ago and its probably configured slightly differently. I was able to see it when it was first installed. Argh...

I have several IP's configured on my local ethernet one of them being in the 192.168.254.0 range. The techie is still able to check the signal with his PDA so surely there has to be an IP configured on the device. Spoke to a Telkom Help Desk person last nite and he seemed to think the WiMax unit should give me an IP address through DHCP. Think they might have to send the guy for some more training.

It's doesn't assign an ip address for you with DHCP.

IP is 192.168.254.251.

And what is the PDA? I only know about the ODU and IDU.

But does the PDA connect to your side of the network? or does it use GSM/3G to connect to the telkom network and look at it from that side?

I got a ping now :D The installation guy swapped pin 5 and 6 on the RJ45 connector that comes from the ODU to the IDU. Cut the connector off and re crimped correctly and whala.

Guys can I ask a stupid question - why this obsession to get into the Wimax unit - surely if it works that is all you need

I see posts that the unit works well is reliable so why fiddle with it

I would guess that the maxim "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

Because if you don't try, you'll never learn..
