Sometimes anti-social, always anti-fascist.
There are several common foods that I have never tried. I actively avoid them and have no desire to taste them, ever.

They are:

Olives
Pears
Capers
Mangoes
Any form of berry or cherry (OK, I'll take a Maraschino in a drink or on a sundae but that's it.)
All jams and preserves

...there may be others.

My wife takes issue with this, her typical argument is that I can't be certain unless I try it so I once put an olive into my mouth but I started retching before I could even bite into it.

I KNOW THAT I DO NOT WANT THESE THINGS.

Does anyone else have an aversion to certain foods despite never having eaten them?

Oh, there is a show on BBC channel - its about people with eating disorders - one show had a guy on who only eats cheese, the other was about a lady who only eats chips. Maybe you should watch that show - you dont have the same issues, but might provide some insight into what the problem is.

Those foods on your list all quite tasty. Except jam - not too fond of that.

Do you maybe have food phobias? Did you have bad incidents with food in your youth ? :D

There must be reasons why you don't eat them? Most of the food we don't like is due to texture, not taste, so your aversion is a little odd. I'll try any common food at least once before making up my mind so by my standards, yes you're being pretty damn fussy.

Why won't you at least try them?

4 of your stuff I don't eat and I consider myself fussy so it means you're also a fussy eater.

I'm quite adventurous with foods in general, like: I'll try any dish or recipe that does not include anything on the blacklist. I have several favourite dishes that are very diverse in origin - I just do not like certain things... I don't need to taste them I know by their appearance that they will be unpleasant and so I avoid them.

I don't see how this is off sides.

Not that I can think of. I like to try everything out there.

Years ago there were many things I would not touch, avo, olives, snails and plenty of other things. These days I love all those things, I would much rather munch on a bunch of olives instead of sweets, they're just so frigging nice. I would kill you for a slice of toast with avo on, really I would ;)

I think many people decide before they even try something that they hate it and work themselves into a state where their brain screws them over and tells them it's schit. Your problem seems psychological. It's sad as you are missing out on some great stuff.

Dammit, don't read the title while scrolling. :D

It's your choice. I've never eaten certain stuff and will never eat them. If it doesn't appeal to you then there is no reason you should try it.

Appearance plays a minor part in food preference/judgement - usually at least. Without some form of synesthesia, how could you possibly associate taste, flavour and aroma with sight? You might just suffer (or in some cases enjoy) a form of synesthesia. In fact scientific research shows that we all have some form of synesthesia to some degree. Yours might be more severe. Or you're just being pig-headedly fussy...:p

If I could go back in time to when I was a kid I'd smack myself for all the great foods I missed out on because I'd prejudiced myself against liking them without ever trying them.

Sounds just like my wife... I am quite aware of the role that texture plays in these aversions, in fact: I'd venture a guess that since I know these things are hideous by their appearance alone, it is their apparent texture that first sets off alarm bells.

I also know that anything that has a pit that does not come clean off of the flesh is not a good thing in my book. Litchis and mangoes fall into this category as do olives in part. I cannot bear grapes that are not of the seedless variety.

Then again, texture wise: what could be more sketchy than a mushroom (maybe an oyster) and I LOVE both of those, in any form.

Looking at it again: I think it is the pit issue that all of the blakclisted foods share, maybe this is the overarching condition?
I am well known for my hatred for strawberries in my household and a pomegranate is a surefire way to ruin my day.

excuse the pun, but it seems you have a pip issue...:p

Yes, you're fussy, but not too bad, lol. I was similar, olives, mushrooms, mustard, mayo, tuna, etc etc etc.

I eventually just tried them, and they're actually all really good. Try keep an open mind. Having too many food preferences just complicates issues.

Oh man... I have been going through this with my daughter for years now. She loves fresh foods like fruit and veg which is fantastic but there are some things that she won't have. Recently sneaked mushroom into her favourite tuna lasagna and won that round by asking her if she liked it then showing her the shrooms after she said it was delicious. I won the food battle but I think I lost a little bit of trust in doing so...

But yea: good point. Thing is I don't feel I am missing out, I am quite happy to indulge in the plethora of foods that don't set off my Spidey-senses ;)

You may be onto something. There is something very similar about all of the blacklisted foods... something I can't put my finger on. I need to concentrate next time I am around one or more of them, maybe I could detect something I am relating them all to which is not strictly something 'food-like'.

+1

I used to hate quite a few myself but have since changed so you should give it a try. Maybe try them in a different form e.g. try mango juice or smoothie instead of Mango itself. Somtimes its how the food looks (presentation) that puts us off rather than the taste.

Yes you are, you have a somewhat child-like mentality regarding the issue.
