With regards to a Talk500 Vodacom contract:

I called Vodacom and asked the cost of changing the cell number.

Vodacom said that is fine, and there is a R 285.00 fee to change the number.

Fine. That is all good.

So I said fine.

Then I said, oh by the way, I would like to keep the original/current number as a prepaid number.

So my number change would go ahead at R 285.00 ....BUT...instead of my current number being destroyed, I am willing to keep that number as a Vodacom pre-paid number.

This is where Vodacom no longer plays ball.

Vodacom says the only way to keep that existing number alive as a pre-paid number is to cancel the contract (which would cost approximately R13,000.00 in terms of the cancellation fee) and ask them to keep it active as a pre-paid number.

What am I missing here? Why are they happy to have me change the number at a R285.00 fee, yet if I want to change it BUT then instead of the old number being destroyed, also keep the old number just as a pre-paid number then it is R13,000.00?

There must be something obvious that I am missing? Why is my request unreasonable?

Ironically MTN allows that.

If you move number to prepaid they auto-assign another number to your contract....

Thanks guys, I start to feel like I'm losing my mind with these companies.

Now I am in an online chat with Vodacom on their website.

Vodacom again saying not possible without contract cancellation:

Transcript Extract:

00:05:54 Farouk : You would like a new number and keep the old one on prepaid.

00:06:01 Farouk : Is this right?

00:06:09 S : Yes please

Found this piece of treasured info (must be top secret):

You can go to Cell-C now and ask them to port your current Vodacom number to your new Cell-C contract, you will get a new Cell-C SIM card. Vodacom will assign a new number to your Vodacom contract and continue billing you for the remainder of your contract, your existing Vodacom SIM will get a new number. In the last month of your Vodacom contract, you ask Vodacom to convert your number to prepaid and they will schedule this to happen when the contract finishes.

After speaking to two team leaders at VodaCom who had no suggestions other than massive cancellation penalties, this appears to solve my situation perfectly. I guess Vodacom prefers customers to port out rather than assist them :wtf:

There is still no place as good as mybb to find solutions to tricky problems :D :D
