Am I getting 512 kb/s ?

Hi, I read an interesting thread earlier where a member with 384 kb/s claimed to be getting a download speed which apparently the equivilant of 512. As there is a price difference between the two of some R90 I did a test on Ashampoo and got the following result

File size 6.6 Mb
Average speed 52.2 kb/s

My speed on the Telkom test is as follows (average over a month)

is 55.5 kb/s


Is this close to 512 service (or at least the 80% best that Telkom Offers) ?
 
The 384 normally performs around 20-25% over its advertised speed.. not that 384 is fast, just the speed you get is a little more than you bargained for.. :)
 
Same with 192K. You, wouldn't believe it but I almost always get 256K speeds, and very often get 384K speeds. :)
 
As opposed to my crappy 1024k line where I very often get as high as 512k speeds, but more often get 384k or lower speeds.

On Saix accounts I am geeting 54KB/s download speeds (HTTP, FTP) on my 192K line

My 1024K line gives 1024K speeds, sounds like a problem on the line.
 
That sucks

On my 384kb connection I sometimes (more often than not) get 192kb - makes me wonder why I bothered paying the extra amount. Must be disappointing to get the same results out of a 1024kb line - Telkom probably gives you the same run-around and doesn't find any solutions to it despite their numerous connections to SAIX and IPConnect. I think alot of it has to do with the IPs assigned when you log on. If I log on at different times of the evening I generally get different connection speeds (either 192 or 384). Try it out.

Ja, sometimes if I use telskim's speed test thingy it does show as 1024k (or thereabouts), but I am in the REAL WORLD, not in Wonderland.

Every test possible has been done on my line, so no, it's not that.

Try any one of the international speed tests available.
 
I am running on a 192 line and getting 512 speeds. Good South Africa value for money!:D
 
I have a 1024k and 384k line. I am able to notice a very large difference between the two lines - even browsing speeds especially on more graphic intensive websites show a significant difference. Before getting my 1024, I had a 512 and there wasnt much difference at all between the 384 and 512. 384 is best value for money but if you want speed 1024 rocks!
 
I've frequently got 1MBit speeds on my 512k line at home, but seldom got faster than 256k at work... It all very much depends on how saturated the DSLAM in your area is, as Telkom installs the same size pipe to every unit. (Or so they say)
 
IMO, the 384 is still the best option for normal home users, price vs speed is very good at just R80 more than the 192k it sometimes gives you speeds comparable to 512k line!
 
I agree. I have the 384 package and my download speeds are the same as my neibor (he doesn't live next to me, though) who has 512. But not ALL the time.


BTW, forgot to mention, my ADSL speeds are MUCH faster on my linux machine...

Linux always clocks much better than windows... I once dowloaded a file at 600, yes 600KBps, and it worked! (4MB, took 10 seconds).
 
belkin wireless router stats page, i have a 384k line, notice hwo precise the upstream value is for speed, is telkom purposely giving me 512?

That's correct... if you look at a 512k line your router will read as follows:

Data Rate UP: 640 kbps DOWN:384 kbps

I think they do this because of the contention ratio's...

If you're lucky and aren't on a busy DSLAM, you'll get good speeds. Mine range between 70kbps and 90kbps, on my 512k line.

If you have a Netgear ADSL Router, login into the router and goto Router Stats -> Show statistics .
Maybe you have so much line attenuation which prevents you from attaining 1Mb/s
