I'm connected to the Hyde Park exchange. Telkom has always informed me that my line is only capable of 4Mb/s and my last check on https://secure1.telkom.co.za/app/dslavailability confirms this . However I have recently noticed that on the status page of my TPLink ADSL router I now get the ff:

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin:
34.7 21.0 db

Line Attenuation:
12.0 7.2 db

Data Rate:
4095 507 kbps

Max Rate:
24616 1060 kbps

POWER:
0.0 -1.6 dbm

CRC:
0 0

Can I crack a bottle of champagne and look around for a 10MB/s account? (Or even If I win the Lotto, a 20MB/s account). My hopes have been dashed before - both by Lotto and Telkom. I'll probably email OpenWeb and ask if they have a 10MB/s test account.

You left out the ADSL mode Gdmt adsl2 ??
If it is Gdmt dont hold your breath.

4095 507 kbps

not Gdmt speeds, so you are on adsl 2 , you can go up to 10mbs then , if your backbone from dslam has been upgraded, as your dslam is adsl 2 all ready.

What you see there is a simple calculation by your Router of SNR vs attenuation values and what would theoretically be possible.

It doesn't "read" it from the line and also isn't an indication of the level of service available.

You have seriously good sync stats now...there is a chance your line may have been moved to another DSLAM or MSAN if you are lucky. Best you can do is, phone in and ask that your line can be tested for 10Mbps.

i wish i could get 10mb, telkom say if within 5km of the exchange then i can, im within 3km yet they wont put me up more than 6mb :'(

Surely that should be the other way around?

Same thing with Westville in Durban (031 266) you can not go higher than 6 meg even if your line supports it.

Contact Telkom via their social media sites (Facebook or Twitter) and ask them to check for you as their call center will most likely not know what you are on about.

SNR Margin(Downstream): 13.3
SNR Margin(Upstream): 18.0
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 33.0
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 15.8
Attainable Downstream 18660 <--
Attainable Upstream 1196

Rate: Upstream 635

ok awesome.
will do.

my figures seem quite similar, so i should be able to go to 10? i am currently on a 4mbps line and account with mweb, why are my speedtest stats so much higher (not that i am complaining!)?

You are already on a 10Meg line it's just that your 4Mbit data account is limiting you.

this is what I am paying mweb for

MWEB Uncapped 4096-Includes Line Rental

Yes, exactly my point.

Telkom classifies both 4Mbps and 10Mbps under the same category and you pay the same for either (depends on availability in your area). You would need to upgrade to a 10Mbps data account to get the full potential out of your line.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll phone Telkom and see if they can upgrade my line.

Follow this man's advice, i upgraded my 4MB account to 10MB this weekend (Sat morning) using their Facebook page and was done within a few hours. :)

Good luck!

Edit: @ simonbee - users have reported getting 6MB speeds on their 4MB uncapped accounts on MWEB, if you test and see what you get then you don't have to pay extra. This has been the case for well over a year from what i have read. ;-)

thanks everyone. for now, I am happy getting 6mb on a 4mb line / account, but at least i know I have options.

When I moved into my house last year, I could only get a stable 1mb line, then in February / March time this year I noticed my line stats improved drastically and upgraded then. I am apparently on the Benmore Gardens exchange, so not sure if their upgrades to VDSL helped me, but I am many KM from that actual exchange.

The distance to the exchange is gradually becoming irrelevant these days with more and more MSANs popping up the only copper loop will be from your premises to the MSAN - the backhaul from the MSAN to exchange will be fibre.

According to your line stats your copper length is approximately 1.5kms.
