Tried to backup my fiance's suister e mail and address book etc.
Nw after re installing windows and her outlook it only seems to have backed up the sent mail and deleted items, no addresses or inbox.
Trying to download recover my files :(

Outlook, or Outlook express? Outlook is usually just one pst file.

Easy tiger. How did you backup the email and address book? Copy a PST (or OST), export using Outlook or use some other util?

If you copied the PST and now when you open the PST the Inbox is empty or doesn't show you may need to do a Hex-hack recovery. You can Google "how to recover deleted items in a PST file" and pick a tutorial. I used the Hex editor to change position 13 in the PST and then scanpst.exe routine many times to save my butt. Just make a couple backups of the files PST first. :D

Good luck and may the force be with you. Preferably at your back. :D

If you backed up the .pst files then your inbox should be there.

What about the server? Is it POP3 from an ISP or GMail or something? Were those e-mails deleted on the server? Otherwise you can just donwload them back again by changing pop3 settings.

And what files did you backup?

*.pab files are Microsoft Outlook address book files.
*.pst files are Microsoft Outlook mail files book files.
*.rwz files are the Microsoft Outlook rules wizard files.

I think the issue is when backing up the PST from Outlook, it seems to have only backed up sent and deleted items - dont know how that was possible as I selected all folders under personal folder.
Now I am trying to get the stuff from the drive using a Recover my files program.

Before you do that chack the mount the PST in Outlook and chack the size of the folders. If this is way less than the physical size of the actual PST then your data is in the PST. It will only disappear if you do a PST compact. Loog for the instructions on doing the Hex edit and scanpst and that will "restore" all your missing items. But Like I said make a copy of the PST before you edit it.

This will be MUCH faster than trying an actual file recovery. Another question is were the contacts all saved in the contacts folder or were they in the classic Windows Address book?

bleh

glad my SU's using yahoo! and gmail for her emails.

Recently made a copy of all our photos on a DVD. Just in case.
